Folks just a quick question

I have a PD140 DSG Octavia.

Is the 6 Speed DSG that is in the car the same as the 6 Speed DSG that you find in Petrol Golf's, Octavia's etc?

Reason I ask is I'm going to get the car mapped (it's done 66k miles) and want to know what a safe torque limit is.

dont the petrol versions come with the new 7 speed version of the dsg, dont think the newer one can cope with the torque of the diesels, so it retains the older six speed.

As far as I know its the same as in my vRS CR 170

It will take a remap without any problems at all

My 1,8 TSi is a DSG-7, I was told that when I was choosing my car, that if I went to TDI it would be a DSG-6.

So apart from 1-ratio less, they should (in theory) be the same, with a little bit of tweaking with the software to allow for the difference in engine type.

I thought there is a major difference between these DSG boxes; 7 speed is 'dry' clutch and 6 speed is 'wet' clutch.

Apart from this difference the 7 speed 'dry' clutch version does not have the torque handling capabilities of the 6 speed 'wet' clutch version; hence it gets used on petrol engined cars e.g. 105 bhp TSI Fabia/Roomster/Yeti

Yours will be a 6-speeder.

I know it's a 6 speed clutch as per my original post. I also know it's a wet plate clutch so will handle considerably more torque than the 7 Speed dry clutch.

I know a 6 Speed can handle near 400lb/ft in a petrol car so I was wondering if the box is the same in a diesel or if it was somehow different.

The car is a 2008 2.0 PD140 L&K

I'm pretty certain it is. My previous 140 PD and my current 170 CR are/were both diesel and have the same box.

My understanding is that the VAG set limit for a 6 speed DSG is 350Nm and 250Nm for a 7 speed. Yours will be a 6 speed (like mine).

I forgot to add that i believe the above are software limits set by VAG for longevity purposes. See the REVO site for info on their remaps of the DSG software. I think they are ramping them up to 400Nm.

My PD140 6 speed DSG superb has been remapped by shark performance, so far no problems to report even when driven with enthusiasm. Given that the superb is a much heavier car I dont think you will have any problems with the octy.

Oh yeah forgot about the wet & dry bit!

That's good to know as I will be getting Ben to map it :thumbup:

My 140tdi DSG is remapped from new (400nm the tuner tells me) and the clock is now showing 327,000kms so I think you should be ok !!!

Nope 350NM. Same as the R36's output. However they will take more. ;)

6-speed DSG can handle A LOT of power - much more than the software limit.

VW contracted HPA to create twin-turbo versions of the R32 (over 600hp) to test the DSG and it stood up to thousands of miles of full load testing.

The 7-speed cannot handle nearly as much power, but then again the engines they are mated to usually are not tuned that much.

To answer your question, yes it is the same. You can confirm by checking the gearbox part code, would be 02E.

The official VW torque limit is the 350 Nm like you say, but providing that the remap torque curve is set so that the car remains near to the vRS torque output up to around 2000 rpm then the gearbox will take a lot more torque, I should think Ben has done quite a few of these so would know what has been recommended and the feedback he gets. The torque should be limited as it is known that a fast spinning drive system can handle more torque than slow spinning one, hence the need for a limit at low revs.

No arguments from me as I know of cars that regularly laugh at any limit. I know of one that has 383bhp plus does 0-60 in 4.6secs and 0-100 in 9.9 on R888's.

Like anything there are exceptions. If you are going to map a DSG car then keep the torque curve smooth and flat. :thumbup:
