Can I use SRP before I clay?

Featured Replies

I'm not suggesting I apply SRP then attempt to clay the car, but I dont have any clay and want to try out the SRP I got yesterday. If I do this and get a clay next week, will I have sealed all the contaminants onto the paint and have a nightmare getting it off, or will it make no difference?

Don't waste your money polishing before you clay, the clay will remove all the polish and contaminants, use a weak water/car shampoo solution in a spray bottle as a clay lube

You could try it on one panel if you really want to test it out

I'm just impatient and want to try out the SRP. I might not get a clay bar for a couple of weeks so at least I know I'm not doing any harm by polishing the car now and claying when I get round to it. I see Halfords do their own clay set for £20 and they have buy one get one free, I might just nip over there tomorrow and get myself 2 of them seeing as the clay cant be used more than once.

You can use clay more than once, its more to do with its condition rather than how many times you use it.

I'm not sure what size it is, but try cutting it into equal parts, and folding in on itself as you go along.

I didnt realise that until I bought one today, the instructtions said to cut it in half and return used clay to the container after use. £19 from Halfords buy one get one free inc lube spray and microfibre cloth, not bad really.

I have to say I'm pretty amazed with the results. At first I thought it was really easy and would be finished in no time, but then after getting used to it I started to pay more attention to the paint work and you really start to see the blemishes, so it ended up taking a lot longer. Have done the roof, bonnet, front wings and the top half of the doors to where the handles are. These areas are definately brighter in appearance even before waxing. Started to apply some SRP but then it started to rain so had to quickly buff it all off, which was highly irritating. Hoping for nice weather again tomorrow, but guess I'll have to wash the car again first :dull:

Good work, yes I'd wash, rinse and dry again before waxing

Don't like the idea of that at all.

I'm thinking (hoping) he meant shampoo :giggle:

hehe good job I got the lube then :giggle:

Speaking of which, that is my only criticism of the Halfords kit. Started fine spraying it on, then suddenly, for no reason at all, the spray stopped working. Couuldnt get the bloody top off but found that holding the bottle upside down and pumping the trigger caused the lube to dribble out. Resorted to wiping the stuff on with my hand, and managed to get through at least half a bottle lol. Will be taking it back tomorrow for a replacement, which will be interesting considering they dont sell it seperately, maybe I'll get another kit. I've spent best part of £60 there in the past 2 days so think it's fair enough.

Bought some Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection to apply after the SRP, was stuck with what Halfords sold as wanted the bogoff. Seems to have some decent reviews. Anyone used this before?
