DSG Problem Maybe?

Featured Replies

I have a 2008 Octavia Estate L+K with the DSG gearbox. Its quite a clonky gearbox and recently it has been surging in reverse and first.

Its particularly bad on a slope or with my folding caravan on the back and it feels like the clutch is engaging and disengaging all of the time.

My previous vehicle was a Mer Vito auto and it was silky smooth. I feel I am allowing for the design differences in the DSG box but feel the clutches should not be doing this?

Has anyone else got any experience of this and what the fix was.

Has anyone got any experience of going from a normal auto particularly Merc to the DSG?

Thanks

Tom

mines a 1.9 tdi dsg with no such "surging". I also tow a van and this doesn't seem to affect the box.

"Clonky" isn't a description I'd give for mine, other than perhaps a very slight jerk when engaging from standstill if you have a few too many revs on which seems fair enough. Generally when in use the changes are virtually undetectable.

Had auto's for years now including Rover, Honda Jazz CVT, Renault, BMW 1 series. I find the BM defintiely the best box to use - seamless throughout. Jazz was good although the same slight jerk at intial pick up as the Octavia, probably to do with having some form of mechanical clutch (centrifugal maybe) as there is in the Octavia (but not centrifugal, twin clutches). The Rover was OK but the Renault's just irritating. I guess the torque converter helps dampen the intial engement which doesn't seem to work quite as well with a mechanical clutch, although of course the converter looses more of the engines power (and hence mpg).

Sounds like it wants checking......preferably before the warranty expires.

I've got the same car and don't experience what your saying. How many miles have you done? Mines done 67k miles and im not sure if the DSG Oil has ever been changed so i'm getting that done next week.

Hi Karl,

Car has 57K on it at the moment and oil and filter was done at 40k as per manufacturers reccomendations - however there was meant to be 6L in the gearbox and there was only 2 so I am worried some damage has been done with that.

Tom

Don't know if it will have done any damage but it certainly wont have been healthy and could be the source of the problem.

Was the DSG Oil & Filter done by a Dealer? If so i'd be playing hell with them.

My 2.0 sport, now sold, did exactly the same thing, before and after oil and filter service. Was clunky occasionally too. Dealer inspected it and said it was the best DSG he'd driven. I thought it was crap. The biggest reason i sold the car and went back to a manual.

Just drove the 7 speed DSG in a brand new Ibiza last night and didn't like that either. Same problem. Surging when reversing slowly up a hill.

my Passat surges in reverse but only when gearbox cold, after the first reverse off the sloping drive on a morning its no problem. Dealer reckons no problem but my feeling is its the hydraulics, cant remember the part name, leaking .
