Ratling/Vibrations Front pillars

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Whilst thankfully my wipers are working and haven't had the heartache that Ben seems to be going through, on my FL DSG there is an almost constant annoying slight rattle/vibration noise both front left and right near the A-pilars. Might this be the trim/speakers in the pillar? I've had passengers try and work out exactly where the noise is coming from but to no avail.

on a side note, has anyone with the DSG notice a mechanical clunk moving into second gear?It doesn't sound wrong but is far more audible than any other gear change in auto mode. Thoughts?

thanks for the input

When first moving off the change from 1st to 2nd is silent and happens at walking pace but then when in 2nd there is a noticable double clunk before it goes from 2nd to 3rd. This doesn't happen on any of the subsequent changes only in the first 20 seconds after starting from when the engine has been off, hot or cold. I initially thought it was the gearbox but have since wondered if it is something that is speed activated after start up rather than anything to do with the box

On your main point i think there was a problem with the A pillar covers discussed on the Yeti forum

Well, as an update, took my car into the dealer today, and they have replaced the passenger side door card apparently, but it was still rattling, so they are ordering a new dash for me, which will arrive in about 2 weeks or so. Friday afternoon car?...

Looks like it wasn't just me being paranoid - hopefully this should spell an end to my annoyance!

BTW my courtesy car is a 57 plate tiptronic fabia 2 - the FL 's are so much nicer inside! This one, although still ok, rattles it's 1.6 like a diesel in comparison to the 1.2 tsi. The interior feels cheap and interestingly, although it has front and rear disc brakes with esp, feels far less capable than mine with its rear drums. Granted, it is three years older and has been used as a courtesy car, but it has still only done about 13000 miles. My two cents.

p.s. did my first redlining in my car this morning, in S on a busy sliproad to avoid being hit by a rather large lorry. Engine had been running for about 20 mins beforehand going along the dual carriageway and its done over 2000 miles now - I wont have damaged it will I?

cheers

I don't know about Mk2 Fabias, but the Mk1 sometimes had a problem with a central dash mounting breaking off, making the sort of noise you describe. I had this problem on my first one. It is a long job, but it does not require a new dash.

Promise you...no, you won't have done any damage. Your motor is still bedding in but the initial bedding in has been completed (first 1,000 miles) and it's beyond the point where it can be damaged by aggressive driving. Over the next few thousands of miles the engine will just get better and better, smoother and smoother, more powerful and quieter. It's actually quite beneficial to give the engine lots of work to do at this point and even during the initial running in period, give it some beans now and again. An engine isn't fully bedded in unless you have taken it to maximum power revs a few times, usually near the 1000 mile mark. You need that metal to metal contact of the piston rings and bores to make everything work properly. Sounds horrendous doesn't it. But it's normal and must be done for the engine to achieve manufacturers stated figures for power and economy. Your engine has been designed so that it can and must be treated in this way. People who drive their cars gently during the running in period never ever have a properly run in engine, especially if it is a diesel. Giving it plenty of beans allows the engine to have a long productive and reliable life. This is in direct contrast with engines of even 30 years ago. So it's good you have done this. Go do it again, you cannot harm it.
