is it worth adjusting the actuator rod on the turbo for a little more boost or will it upset all the electric controls of boost levels etc?

It's not advisable.

The standard engine with the actuator rod left as it is will boost to 10psi and the standard engine map (fuelling, ignition timing) is all based around this. If you fiddle with the actuator you are getting more boost but the engine isn't providing the fuelling etc. to match. In the worst case you could get overboosting which will give a very jerky drive and possibly knacker the turbo after a while.

A remap will increase the boost but also changes the other settings to suit, so is the safest bet
