So Lowering Springs

Featured Replies

So got a little extra cash flow next month been pimpin ma self out :p, decided to go for a lowering spring for ma car. some main points i would like to question, ive been told max i can go is 40mm , so ive seen a set of KONI's (40mm drop) on awsome gti that i quite like. before you all say get coilover's i haven't got that much money and its more for looks than performance, and before you all say dont bother with springs get a RARB, well im gettin one but not yet.

my question is: will these springs damage the shocks (my VRS has 72,000 miles on clock, shocks never been changed)

will a 40mm lower cause any major knocks

what sort of road handling increases can i expect

& ive heard that just lowering springs causes the back suspension to be higher than the front, Is there any solutions to this problem

As you have the vRS, you will actually get a 25mm drop, and your car will look like this:

The shocks won't come to any harm, although you may need to get shorter droplinks to stop the ARB knocking. I believe Mk2 Mondeo ones are just right for this, but you'd have to check.

Handling is just 'less wobbly' with stiffer springs, although if the dampers have 72k on them, you may still have problems with wallowing.

The back's about the same as the front as you can see, however having the back higher than the front is good for combatting understeer anyway (look at a Focus RS)

cheers. what is wallowing im not familiar with that term. tbh id love some coilover's but i dont have that kinda money to spend but £120 quid to give me a bit of a better handling and increased looks seems worth it to me.

Erm, the car rolls about like a boat because the dampers aren't working properly anymore. The reason I mention this is that my car had about 80k on it when I put the Koni springs and dampers on, because I reckoned the OEM dampers were on their way out...

hi i have just fitted eibach lowering springs in mine with 80,000 miles on struts

Yup, i'm well impressed with my Eibachs too, they've been on for about 10k now and looks and handling have been improved!

One thing I did do was buy new bumpstops and shorten them after reading numerous threads on here about concerns of a crashy ride, knocking, etc so I would recommend doing this to anyone fitting lowering springs to their Fabia...

As mentioned unless the springs are specifically for the VRS you won't get the full quoted drop.

Both the H&R's and Eibach's are really good options for the VRS.

Yes I can admit the Eibachs are great for the VRS if just changing the springs.

otherwise yes I am with you and would so much prefer to have a set of FSD's on mine any day of the week.

cheers,

All I can add is the Eibach springs are the best riding springs I have had on any car and they do not lower the VRS by much more than 30mm. Ordered a set for my Clio now and can't wait to get them on. If your going to "Chavsville" then just chop a coil or two of the existing springs should lower it by 50 to 70 mm. Just mega lowering a car does not mean it will handle or ride better. Stick to the tried and tested suspension mods shown on this forum and you won't go wrong.

Sorry to hijack the post. Just noticed the last poster soot1e is now driving a clio cup. I drive a clio 172 at present, but am looking for a fabia vrs. I was just wondering what the handling difference is like between the clio and the vrs. I know the clio is a better handling car but I need the derv for efficiency with a my new job.

Oh and to contribute a bit to the original question, my clio 172 has a full set of coilovers fitted and it is like a go-cart. Ridiculous run to drive and handles amazingly. Unless that is you want to drive on 70% of british roads which are full of holes and bumps and speed bumps and kerbs. These things and my front splitter and centre section of the exhaust are now not friends.

so guys ur all sayin eibachs on a scale of 1-10 i being poor ride quality improvement 10 being excellent ride quality improvement. where would u rate the improvement, and secondly are the koni's specifically for the vrs would i get a 40mm drop or not?

i have apex springs 40mm drop, i would say handling is improved but will need new shocks soon as it doesnt quite feel right. Id go for the eibachs if you want quality, if you want it to look good what is stopping you from saving and going for even cheap coilies like the TA TECHNIX ones

Luckily I drive both, the Clio Cup is my trackday car and as you say handling is good. The VRS is more suited to long distance cruising and is can be fast and frugal but handling ain't that good, on the track it can keep up with similar powered petrol cars but loses out on the corners as you can never find the right gear, 2nd too many revs or 3rd. the revs die and you have a delay while the turbo spools up again but that goes for all TDI cars. If you need a car with pace and not tiring to drive then the VRS is a good allrounder. Improving the handling of the VRS can cost megabucks but you will never get it completely right.

I have those springs running along with some (worn? 133k) dampers - the ride is quiet firm but also rides resonable well. I have some Koni shocks that I will be putting on the front coming soon and it should make it a bit firmer and also ride better if I'm lucky (but I doubt it) ;)
