Featured Replies

Ive just been told when i get the vrs due to it being a turbo, before making any journeys to leave it to warm up for a few min and after a real session on the road to let it cool down for 3 min. Howcome?

Have just been thrashing a 280bhp vr4 wow!!!! its so subtle and straight to the point awesome car.

The cooling advice is due to the fact that if you shut down a hot turbo'd engine , any oil left in the turbo would fry , thus leaving the bearings unprotected and unlubricated. I do think 3 mins is excessive for an 1.8T engine , as the turbo is water cooled , I would say 30 secs to 1 min should be ample

You dont necessarily need to let it idle for 3 mins after a blast, but taking it easy for the last couple of miles or so should give the turbo enough time to cool down after a work out.

Just let the engine idle for a few seconds before you switch it off, so the turbo has stopped spinning.

I have heard that oil pressure is not sufficent to protect the turbo properly at idle speed. At least this is the case for TDIs, so I would expect the same for petrol turbos.

Well, I have a Turbo Timer installed in my car. This thing idle the engine for a preset time. You dont have to wait inside the car for a minute or more.

Just get out of the car and lock it. The turbo timer will keep the engine running for some preset tine and then shut it of.

The Turbo timer has some anti thief features that if sombody wants to drive your car during the idle period it will shut down the engine. Its monitors the the Parking hand brake and the speed...............If someone lower the parking hand brake it shut of the engine.

Also the Turbo Timer as a AUTO feature thats know how long it have to keep the engine idleing to a safe shut of or you can preset the time you one.

Funny that you mention that Turbo, as I was just reading through the mailorder catalogue that came with the copy of Fastcar UK (no need to comment on that :p) from Demon Tweeks, and noticed that item. Think it was the Greddy one and it costs about

Don't expect VR4 performance from the VRS unless you visit some friendly people first !

I have plans for 300bhp once its out of warranty.

The vr4 was wicked, a silent hum at 7000rpm, no turbo lag from the twin t2's, at the lights next to a mondeo, was in passenger seat, turned round to see where it went, turned back round and was 100+ mph. The vr4 is a seriously underated scarey car.

The insurance on that will be pretty steep though, especially if you're under 25!

Though if you have 0 NCB it'll still be very pricey... :(

Try to get married before then too, that's supposed to help! ;)

That 3000 GT VR4 looks like a real beast. I know someone who drives around in a slightly knackered Mitsubishi Starion. Thats got over 200HP under the bonnet and I tried to keep up with him once... and failed :(

true about ncb but i plan on staying on my mums insurance as id rather not be ripped off on the grounds of age discrimination.

There are 2 vr4's the 3000 gt and the galant, i was in a galant. very subtle looking car. I love starions, id get one if it wasnt for 4 star petrol and very expensive parts. Very tuneable.
