£70 to remove three wheel studs - Value for Money?

Featured Replies

I bought a VRS that had three original locking wheel nuts and one aftermarket. So that I can actually get those three wheels off the car I decided it would be a good idea to get the special tool.

Turns out that they are all individual and will cost a fair whack to buy (after giving the dealer a code of somesort), but not to worry, because the dealer has a master key which will get them all off.

So I say to the bloke, 'well I'll bring the car around, you can pull the studs out and I will replace with the aftermarket ones - of course I expect to pay for the privelidge'.

He checks with the service manager who says I'll need to book it in for a minimum of 1 hour and that will cost £70 + VAT.

To remove three wheel studs.......

Do you name and shame dealers on this forum?

What a rip off!! Thought might say 10-20 but 70!! Only take him 5-10 mins

I would try one of these instead, slightly cheaper!

Sadly they normally charge by either half or full hour as a minimum.

Those wheel nut removers work a treat, My mate used one on his Passat, He whacked on hard with a lump hammer to get a grip and it turned first time.

or a T70 torx or 16mm multi spline drive hammered in does the trick too..

in fairness it has taken me an hour to get 1 off before now (without damaging the alloy) when its was so tight it stripped the splines off the locking key so an hours lab could be optomistic too.

how tight are the other wheel bolts as this will give you an indication of how easy it will be to remove

if you are local to me i'll do it for a beer or 3 :p

Sorry for being thick but you're saying you didn't have the locking nut with the car?

+1

used these before, you don't really need to whack em on as they are left handed thread and just tighten as you are undoing the stud

Reminds me of that old well used cliché :-

"In the land of the blind the one eyed man is King"

Your right Bowders, now you mention it my mate is a bit ham fisted and hits everthing with a hammer, not a good advert for a mechanical fitter.

Never seen these before, are they single use?

Don't think so, I just happened to come across them this morning whilst looking for something else and then saw this thread so I haven't used them.

Good quality one's can be used many times, My mate paid £18 for his and has used it quite a few times, not sure of the make though.

Halfords, Euro carparts and GSF sell them think they are £18 also
