Irish Postcodes

Featured Replies

Hello,

As some of you fellow paddies may be aware a private initiative to launch an Irish postcode system has been launched known as a Loc8 code. This saves the government ****ing away €50 million on a system that suits An Post's unions. Essentially it is an 8 digit alpha numeric code that identifies a point with an accuracy of 6m so it is more a location code than a postal code so things like a bus stop or a car accident can have a Loc8 code. Really it is a Lat/Long in an easier to remember format. Another advantage of the code is that it can be shortened so if you leave out the middle 2 digits it identifies a 100m x 100m square rather than a point and if you use only the first 3 digits it identivies a 3.5km x 3.5km square.

Have a look at the Loc8 code site here My link

Now Garmin already support the feature and have exclusivity until the end of September thereafter it is available to be licenced by all manufacturers. If VAG could introduce support into the Columbus head unit it would make navigation in IRL much much easier.

So please annoy your dealer to annoy Skoda or annoy Skoda IRL yourselves to try and get his feature introuduced.

BTW it is the physical GPS that has to support Loc8 codes, Navtec don't have anything to do with it so it would take a firmware update to turn on the feature.

Regards,

GT

You can already enter your destination as a long./Lat. so I guess if the system is based on this then it should be possible to convert between the two easily.
