Which filter?

Hi guys,

I am definetly getting a PD160 intake and was just wondering which panel filter goes best with this mod.

I am also planning a remap and decat, if that makes any difference to what I should choose.

doesnt make much difference tbh, most people will say the oe if fine but for £30ish id go with a green/k&n [more or less the same filter] can be cleaned/reused over and over again emoticon-0148-yes.gif

+1 for K&N - had em in all 3 of my last cars with 0 probs and improved power. :thumbup:

But I'd like proof they filter out the really fine dirt as well as an OE paper one.

There have been a few posts on here of people with performance filters noticing dirt on the pipework on the "clean" side of the air filter.

Performance ones give good air flow yes but they filter badly as tests have shown. You might get a small improvement but i wouldn't say it is worth it for the sake of filtering. A valid point i'd say if you want to look after your car and keep for many years. K&N, piperx etc Usually letting in small particles of 6 microns or less. Another thing to bear in mind is the efficiency of them, they start off great but as they get clogged air flow lessens and then you need to clean, dry them properly and re-oil them. An expensive business. Cotton air filters loose about 3-5% of its material each time they are washed. Foam air filters are good in theory especially the multi level ones but then when dirt gets clogged in the middle layer you have no way to reach them.

I personally would stick with OEM filters especially Bosch and Febi. I change my oem filter 4 times a year so get good airflow excellent filtering all for just £40. And no need to deal with waste oil,cleaning it up or re-oiling kits.

I have a jetex panel filter if you want it. Apparently it filters to 2.8 microns(hence why i bought it) It was on my car for about an hour and then i took it off so in almost new condition. Its blue and made out of cotton.PM me if interested. It does sound a bit louder up the top end

Its not "expensive bisiness" to clean and reoil a K&N filter once every 10k miles or so. You can get a cleaning kit for around £5 and seeing as they last a lifetime they cost you considerably less then paying £40 a year for OEM foam ones.

OEM and change every 10,000 miles. No oil and MAF issues, OEM spec filtration and filter is only £6 from a factor. Performance filters just do not filter down to the really fine particles.

even if its true if you change your oil regularly it shouldnt be a problem.

Er oil refers to over oiling the panel filter. Any filter that increases air flow must have less filtration.

So why do you oil a panel filter? Answer, they will not trap the finer particles a paper filter will. Seriously, if it says performance on the box, and it costs 5 times more than the OEM part, it's snake oil.

Never mind getting into parameters such as 'Is the forced induction pressure the same pre turbo' :o

£10 off ebay and I remember paying something along this when I bought the same cleaning kit for the 57i induction jobby. The oil is quite pretty...its red to match the color of the material

Plus disposing of the used cleaning solution and dirty oil legally.Not just tipping out into the drain and into our eco system.

And the "OEM foam ones" you mentioned are not foam (unless you are talking about the Amsoil which is only available in the US) but paper which has a better fibrous structure and traps dirt better.

Another point to bear in mind and I know its off topic but if you have a performance air filter you also need to factor in the costs of doing additional oil changes. This is just my opinion but if you're letting more dirt into your engine then you should look to change the oil to compensate for that.

An independent test was done on these by bob the oil guy and it showed the k&n didn't flow as well as the claims.It was a very good unbiased review.

Its pretty to look at and its blue. It does sound a bit nicer up the rev range but I wouldn't call it loud.

Wouldn't bother really. As mentioned previously, just replace the standard one. i got one the other day and that was £10. saves buying one for £30/£40 then messing around oiling it when ever you need to and risking problems with over oiling and the MAF. u might get 1bhp, Hardly worth it really

Get a new standard one every year, about £9/ £10.

Can't see a filter that has been cleaned out, out-perfoming a new filter, and with no-mess involved.!!emoticon-0148-yes.gif
