Bolero and CD changer

Featured Replies

Hi all, thinking of replacing the stream unit with a bolero, I am aware that the bolero has an inbuilt 6 CD capacity, will the boot mounted CD changer work with bolero allowing a CD stroreage capacity of 12 in total in the car?

Thanks in advance!

Don't forget that the Bolero can also handle mp3 music whereas the boot changer can't so one cd in the dash is easily worth all of the ones in the boot.

Thanks John, will the boot changer continue to work though?

Unfortunately I can't tell you as I haven't a diagram to see if the pin outs of the Bolero are the same as the Stream.

not sure if you'll actually use all 12 cd's even if it can do it.

The reason i say that is cos the bolero has a SD card slot that can offer you 32GB of music!!!

IIRC - It can also handle (non protected) WMA files.

So assuming you have 700MB CD's in each of the 6 slots and a 32GB SD

That's 36232 MB

Assuming 5MB per track, that's 7246 tracks (VERY rough maths.. Not taking into account Gig / Meg conversions, Bit Rates, etc).

And you want an additional 120 tracks (assuming 20 tracks per standard CD * 6 CD changer in the boot).

I don't think I have ever owned that much music.

In the grand scheme of things an extra 120 tracks doesn't make that much difference.

EDIT - I'm sure someone will correct my maths.

Thanks for all the replies people! here are a few points I would love to get cleared up.

1. As stated I am aware that with the inbuilt 6 CD and SD reader in the bolero has a huge ammount of capacity to play music however as I am planing on fitting the unit to a pre-facelift car I would still like to retain the facility to use the standard fit RS boot changer purely as I wouldnt like to see it not being wasted and as I have alot of original music CD's. Will this unit work with the Bolero as it currently does with my stream unit?

2. OEM Bluetooth - I retrofitted an OEM bluetooth system in 2008 (not long after I bought the car) from VRStu, currently the bluetooth as u all know works throught the maxidot display, if I fit a Bolero will I get phone menu's and dialling capability via the Bolero touch screen? I have seen that the Bolero has a 'phone' button on the bottom left...

3. Will I need to get the can-bus recoded to take the Bolero in a similar fashion to if I was going to fit a Columbas or is it simply a plug in job?

4. I assume that the Bolero will fit in to the slot where the stream currently lives and the silver trim which surrounds radio and climate controls etc will simply fit back on around it?

5. I have just become aware that not all OEM bluetooth kits are the same...would I be best off to remove the 'guts' of the kit I bought from VRStu and fit a newer unit while I am at it to insure future compatability with phones?

Sorry for all the questions...would love to clear these questions up before I make a purchase,

Thanks in advance...

Alan

1. Bolero wont control an external changer

2. Yes, touch screen can control the phone system

3. It'll probably work but might need coding to fully enable phone features (depends if car Bolero came from had the phone option). Worth checking and getting it correctly coded in either case.

4. Yes

5. If it works with your current phone then I wouldnt waste your money.

Thanks Keith....think I might try and save a bit more and find a Columbas unit which if I understand correctly will give me on screen telephone operation like the bolero and will utilise the boot mounted CD changer. I am not that pushed about the sat-nav feature but I guess its also a plus.

You need to be careful with phone control and the Bolero, as you're fitting it to an older car. When I had this setup on my previous MY06 vRS TFSi, the Bolero wasn't able to control the phone, it had to be done via Maxidot.

I believe this is to do with the version of the convenience module that's installed in the car.

And as mentioned, you can't use your old changer. And you loose the aircon/parking sensor information that gets displayed on the Stream. Neither bothered me though and on the changer issue you can utilise the Bolero's 6CD in-built changer, so at least you're no worse off.

I'm on the lookout for a Bolero for the Octy I have now, so if you've decided you're going for a Columbus instead, please let me know if you've found any

Cheers,

Steve
