hi, I have a similar car to you, 03 plate 1.9 tdi Elegance Estate only had it a week and i'm already fed up with the stereo, my left front speaker does the frrrbbb sound with any base at all even at volume 2, I get slight interference with AM radio like when listening to talk sport going to work when I press the brake pedal the speakers click!

your head unit, was it a straightforward swap? easy to do? i'm interested...

cheers

Your problem is that the left hand front speaker has blown and changing the headunit will not make that better. Same with the AM radio, all that needs is a noise supressor in the incoming power line which you can get from halfords for small money. Fix your speakers and power supply before changing the HU.

Cheers Manny, Job for the weekend. The car runs like a dream so if this fix works i'll be one happy bunny!

Careful, I had what I thought were blown front speakers, but it turned out to be the foam membrane behind the speakers flapping around. Take the speaker out, but don't unplug it stick the radio on & listen, if it doesn't sound distorted then, more than likely it's the membrane flapping around.
