V6 fuel consumption?

Featured Replies

Looking to buy a new Superb combi/estate. The 170bhp Diesel looks great but you can't have auto and 4x4. However the V6 has both as standard.

Does anyone have any idea what the fuel consumption looks like on a V6?

Tried searching but with no results

Any one know of a technical reason why Skoda could not offer DSG and the haldex system together in the 170 CR?

A few chaps on this forum have got V6 Superbs and I'm sure will be along shortly.

Out of interest how much does such a beast cost in Switzerland.

First on the 4x4 +auto on the diesel: it is available on the current Passat, at least as 4Motion; not sure if this is the same as the Haldex approach

Price starts at about 51K Swiss, for the saloon, 53K for the Estate, with a whole heap of goodies added in it still only goes to 62K. Auto 170bhp Diesel Elegance with goodies (not GPS) about 4K cheaper.

Note VAT in Switzerland is 7.6% and is included in the above.

So if you look at these and consider that 4x4 is included, then you do not pay much for the privilege of visiting the filling station more often ;)

I know the V6 will drink heavily round-town and if you use the power, but I drive a lot on country roads with little traffic with longer journeys from time to time so my guess is that I will get the "mixed" consumption or better. However I would like some comments from experience!

My best average is 30.8 mpg on dual carriageways and with a bit of stop start stuff. That's over a journey of 27 miles. However, doing 6 miles to the gym and back can bring it down to 15.1 mpg in traffic. It may seem strange but you get many more mpg if you get your foot down and press on than if you just poodle about! I would guess that if you used it on the sort of runs you describe you should average low 30's. My only criticism is that they should have put an 80 litre fuel tank in rather than the 60 litre one that's in it! It's a nice car!

i have driven the 170cr diesel and from inside the cabin it is very refined. perhaps not quite a v6, but very petrol-like. it is not intrusive at all like my 140pd octy

30.8 is not too bad. That is 9.2 l/100Km and the official mixed is given as 10.2. This will be a company provided car, so I need to convince the powers that I won't be draining the coffers too fast...

Any idea how this compares to real world consumption for one of the turbo petrol versions? I currently run a 2.3t Saab, so this is a reasonable comparison point.

The other thing to throw in (just in case anyone is interested) is that petrol is cheaper in Switzerland than the UK, and cheaper that in France (where I live). And I think France is still a bit less than the UK on current exchange rates for petrol, but a lot less on dieseel. But in Switzerland Diesel costs more than petrol. (so what was the age of the driver? :giggle: )

So if I'm paying, diesel is better all round. But if the company pays (fuel bought in Switzerland) the consumption benefit is offset by the extra cost.

I haven't yet driven either model, but I have driven other diesels and the figures on the 170 look very good. I'll probably end up losing the 4x4 (useful round here in winter, but I have an old Range Rover for really bad days) as the auto is nice to have and I still have my own car with manual box for "driving".
