How do I do this?

Featured Replies

Hi guys

Just need a quick pointer.

Selling my car. The private plate is something I wanna keep and put on another car in the future.

I am aware I have to pay the DVLA to retain the registration number on a retention certificate. (robbing bar stewards!)

Questions are:

1. How much to keep it for 2/3 yrs.

2. What registration number will go on the car once the private plate is off? Will it revert back to the old one?

3. Do I have to pay an additional fee when my new car is having the private plate put on it?

4. How long does it take to do all this roughly?

5. Why won't the DVLA website explain things properly then I would'nt have to pester other people?

6. No question six. :giggle:

Cheers in advance

It will cost you £155 to put it on retention, this includes the assignment fee to put it back on another car within 36 months.

Cheers Ant. I found the details on that the other day. Just need clarification on the old reg. And what, if any, charges are incurred for putting the old reg back on. Unless the DVLA assign it another registration.

I am aware I have to pay the DVLA to retain the registration number on a retention certificate. (robbing bar stewards!)

Questions are:

1. How much to keep it for 2/3 yrs. as Ants says elsewhere

2. What registration number will go on the car once the private plate is off? Will it revert back to the old one? Normally yes, if the old number has not been reallocated,

3. Do I have to pay an additional fee when my new car is having the private plate put on it? No, this is included in teh retention/reassignment fee

4. How long does it take to do all this roughly?

5. Why won't the DVLA website explain things properly then I would'nt have to pester other people?

You can get it all done there and then, at your local DVLA office. If I guess correctly by you buying your next car 'locally' at Hobins, it'll be Stretford, just on the main road round the corner from Man U. If not, see http://www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/contactus/localoffices/findnear/england.aspx

By filling out form V317 and taking your V5 and MoT if applicable you'll get a replacement tax disc (remember to note the serial number of your existing disc on the form) and a re-printed MoT as well, with the old reg on (again, if vehicle is more than 3yrs old). Biggest variable is how busy it will be - as they process professional driver licenses, taxi licenses, the trade have to go there to sort private plates for customers etc etc etc - but on a good day you'll be in and out within 30 mins.

Fairly painless, but yes - money for old rope. As a breakdown, upto 1yr retention is £105, 2yrs £130, 3yrs £155.

HTH,

Steve
