Cracked windscreen - 53 VRS Estate

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just registered so please enjoy the health giving properties of the laughing you'll do at my silly questions!

If all goes well I'll be buying a 53 VRS estate this week. Had a look at it today and having it inspectd by someone who knows what you should actually look at tomorrow! The car currently has a large crack in the windscreen which the seller was open and honest about when we discussed the car over the phone prior to viewing. He is getting it replaced on his insurance. That's all cool. However, when we went through the extensive history of receipts etc., there was another windscreen replacement. Just struck me as a little strange - I've never had a windscreen crack. Are these models known to be prone to it, can cracks be caused by 'enthusiastic' driving on not so good B roads or has the guy just been unlucky? Any thoughts much appreciated.

John

mine still seems to be on the original and its done 90k. it's going to bet replaced next year as there are a few chips.

Probably just been unlucky. You might want to check if the car has been involved in a shunt though in which the frame around the screen area might have been bent as if a bodyshop don't straighten this out properly it will crack screen after screen.

I had a brick dropped on my car a couple of years ago and it bent the metal under the bottom of the screen, they took ages getting it back to the right shape

Thanks - as you say, definitely need to check if its been involved in a shunt.

My car is on at least its 3rd windscreen, as I have changed two since I have owned it. My first one cracked in a very cold evening when it was in a car park (after I had drive about 10 miles with the heater on), and the 2nd time it was a stone chip which grew slowly over 8 months (till the MOT was due).

fwif, mine have cracked on opposite sides - initially it was the nearside and then the recent one was on the offside.
