Featured Replies

Can some one recommend a good online number plate making service.

I need some new ones making and don't want to pay through the nose or finish up with rubbish quality.

Fancying 3d effect. Any help appreciated.

Yep, I've got someone who I've used a number of times. Quality plates and a quick turnaround - good prices too.

I'll PM you.

Steve

Elite Car Care do them. I could post a link but not sure on rules.

I got a rear plate with 3D effect from Ebay for £4.85 inc postage.

Bargain

I've been looking at new plates from these guys:

Demon plates

Never actually used them but they have cool online config app.

What's the betting that if you get non standard plates on a Vrs some policeman is going to stop you and fine you £60 and give you 3 points on your licence. :'(

Me? I'm boring and just stick to the regulation plates - got my bog standard rear plate for the bike carrier done last week for £6.95 at the local bloke's.

i want 3d but you can get them road legal.

Thanks everyone, will check out your suggestions

Only the British Standard lettering, font and style is road legal. People who have modified plates deserve that fine and the points, just seems so rare they get caught.

3D lettering is allowed, see extract below from DVLA website

Replacing your number plate

When replacing your number plate you should make sure that the correct material has been used to manufacture the plate. It should be made from a reflective material. Front number plates must display black characters on a white background and rear number plate must display black characters on a yellow background.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency is not aware of any self-adhesive number plates that meet the British Standard requirements.

Characters on a number plate can be 3D, providing they meet all the other requirements, but honeycomb or other background patterns are not allowed.

Also, the characters on a number plate need to be a standard height and width.

Your number plate should show the correct:

  • •character height - 79 millimetres
  • •character width - 50 millimetres (except the figure 1 or letter I)
  • •character stroke - 14 millimetres
  • •space between characters - 11 millimetres
  • •space between groups - 33 millimetres
  • •top, bottom and side margins - minimum 11 millimetres
  • •space between vertical lines - 19 millimetres

Is that ambiguous though? '3D' could mean 'with a shadow or other 3D illusion' or 'physically embossed'.

Apparently if the police issue a ticked for dodgy personal plates they have to fil in paperwork & send to DVLA as a warning that these could be revoked.

Not sure if there is paperwork for non personal plates.
