VRS TDI opinion wanted

Featured Replies

Hi All

I am looking to buy a 2006 56 plate Octavia vrs Tdi with 19000 (yes 19000) miles FSH for £9200 , is it worth it , this will be my first Skoda

My concern would be with the DPF (filter in exhaust). If it has only done 19k in 4 years then it may have done lots of short journeys only. DPFs do not like short journeys hence it could be clogged. Also diesel engines in general do not like short journeys as they take longer to warm up compared to petrols. In fact I think I would prefer to have a slightly over mileage car compared to one with so few.

If you want a diesel buy a 1.9D, generally better consumption and the 130 hp are very similar performance.

If you want a quick car go for a 1.8T or 2.0T L&K or VRS, still do 35-40 mpg, much more fun to drive than diesels engined variants.

DSGs are great but beware of the 40K mile service cost which is an extra expense.

Pretty much all Skodas are great. Fabia VRS diesel particularly which in the dry is quite possibly the quickest diesel Skoda to 60 ie low 8s and does 57-odd mpg.

The PD 170 diesel will be quicker than the 1.9 PD (not sure they did the 130BHP version engine in the Mk 2 Octavia although I could be wrong).

The DSG in this age car also does not have the flappy paddles I believe,

thanks for the replies guys

I currently run a Tolly 1.9 tdi 150 so i am used to diesels , I take onboard whats been said about the DPF it was one of my concerns but i am working on the presumption that if its blocked it will show a warning on the dash and that a good long thrash will burn it clear .

The current owner does not do too many short runs it it as he mainly uses his other car , also it comes with a warranty from warranty direct

Half a second maybe, small difference I think. The fuel consumption seems to be better my around 5 to 10 mpg in my experience in the 1.9 over the 2 litre. I have one of each at the moment and had several 105s and 130s in the past.

I have order flappy paddles in my L&K on order which I hope will be a nice touch as I saw them on a VRS TDI but that only had a 6 speed DSG which harms consumption by 5% where the 7 speed improves it by about 5% (on TSIs).

The DPF isnt fitted to the pre- facelift cars , so thats one thing you can forget about. Have a browse through the forums , as Im considereing the same car thats what i have been doing , and there are a few things (especially turbo failures) that are putting me off the TDI version.

Ps thats a good price , the one Im looking at (same year - 56 plate) has 30 odd thousand miles on it and is up at £10450.

You are correct , the 1.9 PD engine fitted to the Mk2 was the 105BHP version , the same spec as the Fabia.

All the diesel VRS cars had the DPF fitted so this will be an issue for the OP since they are looking at a VRS car. It was only non VRS diesel Octavias that did not have the DPF fitted.

so my 07 plate Octavia PD TDi Vrs doesn't have a DPF fitted?.......Strange I thought it did

All pd vrs cars have dpfs so you will.

I thought the DPF only came in with the CR engine - or am I thinking of the Fabia? Hmm well if the TDI has a DPF after all then I'm definately not buying one.

The DPF came with the CR engine for all other Octavia models apart from the PD 170 in the VRS. Hence all other PD engines (1.9 and the 2.0 140) will not have a DPF apart from the 2.0 170 which will have a DPF.

I had a PD 170 for 4 years with a DPF (normal driving was 10 miles to work and back each day) and had no issues with the DPF. The regen light only came on once in those 4 years and that was to do with an exhaust sensor fault so does not really count. The DPF really is not something to be worried about too much.

My drive to work is under 2 miles , even my petrol Fabia isnt up to temperature when I switch it off! It is on the way home though , as I live at the top of a hill!!

At under 2 miles surely you could walk this fairly quickly since driving such short journeys will not be doing the engine a lot of good (maybe even get a push bike). Both these options would be a lot greener too.

Id lose 20 mins of sleep a day though...lol..... Seriously though I used to bike it when I was younger , couldnt cope with the journey home now up that hill after 8 hrs manual work.

Maybe a little 50cc scooter would be better then. !!!!!!!!!!

LOL maybe ill just stick to a car and not get soaked when it rains....dont really care about MPG as long as short drives dont throw up check engine lights and faults - so probably petrol power is the way to go for me , maybe one of the new 1.2 TSI FL Fabias , as my current little MPI has been a great car for the 5 and a bit years I've owned it - however I miss the punch of my old Mk1 Octavia vRS....

The Mk 1 VRS was a great car with great punch and good ecomony considering the performance.

Yes the 5 valve head helped in that respect , I used to see more MPG out of that car than I do out of my 1.4 Fabia! :giggle:

I had a 1.2 fabia as a courtesy car once for a few days and got worse fuel economy from that too than my Mk 1 VRS. It was at the point I realised a small engined car was not going to be suitable for my driving style!!!!
