felly wheel width

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I'm fairly new to all this forum stuff, but I just wanted to ask a quick question...

I've got a 2000 1.3 mpi felly and am looking for some alloys, what is the maximum width for front and rear?

I've not got any plans to lower the car, however it is still a possibilty.

Actual diameter of the wheel is not a problem because i definately will not be looking at anything over 14".

Thanks for the help in advance.

ps. Sorry another question in the same topic but if anyone reading this knows of any places/websites I can find premade half rollcages for the rear of the felly would be nice.

16" rims running 195/45R16's will be the max you could feasibly stick on, but 195/45R15's would be a safer bet, and leave it a smidge of clearance too. The rears are limited in terms of clearance to the squared off wheel arches, might be worth rolling the lip on them to get as much room as possible.

Personally i reckon they look better slammed with 7J 13" Dub rims on, but thats only IMO B)

yeh thats what I was thinking, 13 possible 14 inch.

I've seen some 5J ones on a certain auction site that would fit... whats the difference between 5J and 7J?

i understand all the PCD measurements and the fact it has a 57.1 spigot size but whats 5/7J all about? or is this just me being stupid and the 5 is the width?

the 5 or 7J thing is the outer with of the sealing surface of the tyre in inches (ie the measurement where the tyre actually touches the wheel), so 5J = 5 inches

you will struggle to find a vw fitment wheel which is 7J

For the cage, you'll be lucky to find someone selling them new, so secondhand is your best bet. Bolt-in wise only Safety Devices listed them when I was looking (2007), and would only make them up in batches of 10. There are people who will make a one-off for you, but you're looking at a fair bit of money - I was quoted £1000-1200 to make a bolt-in cage, and it would have meant them having the car for a week (and obviously getting a bare shell to them as well). Ended up getting a weld-in kit from Custom Cages (then it was £450, but now more like £600), although that's obviously a different kettle of fish altogether!

Thanks for the help guys, I think the roll cage will come at a much later stage in development anyway.

There is a 1.4 16v transplant topic on here but I've been doing some research and in the czech there seems to be alot of 1.6 16v transplants, a couple of which with throttle bodies! which would be sweet as.

I was hoping to head somewhere towards a 1.6 16v transplant, with/without the throttle bodies, but need to know what everyone thinks the best size wheel would be if I wanted to go down this route and if there would be any point spending any money cos presumably I would have to change the front axles with the engine transplant when it comes to it?

Hubs would still be 4 x 100 pcd with a 57.1 bore tho...even if you fitted the Polo/ Fabia cast offs. Wheels will still be same, mate!

Thats alright then, I've actually just sourced some vw polo alloys, so I worked it out for myself after I'd posted, but thanks!

fabia wheels are a 5 stud fitment so they are a no go..

personally i wouln't go any bigger than 15" wheels on a road-going felicia

Update on wheels: polo alloys on but foul on the track rod ends so 3-5 mm spacers needed for front wheels. Otherwise they fit fine :) for anyone who wants to do this themselves they are standard polo 6n alloys 14 inch, 4x100, 57.1, 6J. Tyres are 185/55. Slight balacing problem on mine but nothing that major. Sorry if this post is in an odd format, it's from my iPhone.
