Gearbox Issue?

Featured Replies

Dip the clutch when the gearbox/clutch is cold and it judders and i sometimes have to wrench it out of gear! Thats with the clutch to the floor, it also doesn't always wanna go back in but will go into any other gear without issue. Soon as the car/gearbox is warm it's fine

Could i be needing a gearbox oil change? It's never been done at all as i never knew it could actually be done till recently

Yup, oil change or cable adjustment (cable reset). Possibly clutch master or slave cylinder.

I'll do the oil change asap then and speak to my mate about doing the cable reset as he's a skoda technician

Then hope the clutch is fine lol

The gearbox hasnt got a specified interval for changing its oil. Unless its got mega miles, it shouldnt need doing, I did a change on my Bora at about 115,000 miles, and the be fair it made no difference whatsoever to its feel (was getting notchy going into second - particularly when cold).

If you do the fluid change becareful with the oil, as it is rank, it Stinks!! As it has a lot of sulphur in it, and stinks if you get it on yourself.

I would say the cable adjustment should be a lot more fruitful, would be inclined to try that first.

Another thing that I just thought of - on the Bora (6 speed box) you could do a cable reset quite easily by locking the gear stick in position with a drill bit. accessed under the gear lever gaitor then adjusting something on the cables where they sit on top of the gearbox. Does anyone know if its the same on the Fabia 6 speed box?

How do you do the cable adjustment? Is it a garage trip or something I can do on my drive?

On the drive I am sure, I know the 5 speed gearbox requires a special jig that only the dealers have as my mate had to have this done on warranty.

But I am sure the 6 speed you have do yourself.

On the six speed box, you slide back two collars, one each at the gearbox end of the cables. You then push down the gearbox selector assembly and turn a small lever on the side of the gearbox through 90 degrees. This locks the box in neutral. You then centre the gearstick, and lock it in position with an 8mm drill bit. The drill bit goes through a hole in the stick base, and into a hole in the chassis. Then you release the locking collars, turn the little lever back to normal position (mega important), remove the drill bit, and that's it.

Best to take the battery and battery tray out for easy access.
