Is that ntl? I don't think I'll bother, because though they increase the bandwidth don't they also introduce a download limit?

They don't usually enforce it though...it's one of those things to encourage "fair usage"...

Rob.

There are caps now, and there is caps then, for 2mb it's going to be 30GB, which is the same as the 1gb per day for 750k now....

No change other than 2mb line... will do fine for me :)

Which providers are doing these deals?

Edited to say: It says in the article, early 2005 for NTL...anyone know anything? I like the sound of 3meg :)

Hmmmm. Its weird but now I'm on 1mb ADSL, I suddenly feel the yearning to go to the next step up too. Would regular ADSL setup be able to receive 2mb? Time to visit Wanadoo.co.uk then. :D

In theory that is, the big difference between ntl and the various adsl offerings is that with ntl you are allowed to exceed the theoretical cap. With the others your connection stops working or offers reduced capabilities.

I am also looking forward to the improved ntl speeds, I do hope they do something about the lousy 128k upstream though.

I'll second that...1.5meg connection, and still can't host a decent game of ghost recon :(

NTL will start enforcing it before long though.

Some of the ADSL providers have also started putting limits on.

It was Plusnet who moved all the high users to a single shared pipe so they were only able to get about 1/10th of the rated speed.

They all deserted very quickly which of course is what they wanted to happen.

Depends on where you are ie whether your phone line will take it. The one thing positive I have to sayabout being down in bucks at least they are not stuck in the dark ages with t'internet like Lincolnshire.

Xbox or PS2? I have 750\128k upload and host Socom2, Burnout3 and Toca2 with no problems on the PS2.

Xbox...It really doesn't like hosting on such a pitiful upload...6 players max, and that normally lags :thumbdwn: However, I'm also led to believe that it is partly due to poor programming on the part of the ghost recon team.

Cheers

Have not tried GR for the PS2 so may well be that.....

Unless yopur paying for a didicated gaming con, yhe uploads are always pitiful in comparison to the download.

From my time playing Rainbow 6/Rogue Spear/Athena Sword, a reasonable con will support 6-12 players if they all have the same con speed. The problems of lag appear when players with dial up etc try joining as they see you with a wicked ping, join in then kill your ping.

At the moment I've got a contract for 750mb bandwidth and no download limit - I think I've read that ntl will continue to offer this to existing customers but not new ones, and existing customers will have the choice to 'upgrade' to 2mb and 30gb download limit if they want. Though I've had no problems with ntl my 12 month contract is up in Feb and it might be time to switch altogether to sky plus and something like Bulldog ADSL (ADSL costs are going to drop even more next year as BT have to drop their wholesale charges  ).

I like the bit in the link posted above where ntl say "...I think the market needs to accept that the days of unlimited usage for all are over. The vast majority of users will not be impacted by the limits, but the small number who regularly use GB by the ton drive our costs up significantly and, since we are not a charity, we need to recover them somehow." Not a charity but a bloody commercial organisation that I pay

750mb.. thats a storming connection :D - assuming you mean 750k then check your T&C's' date=' there is a "fair usage" cap of 1gb a day.. I don't think they have ever come down on those that occassionally go over, but I know for a fact they have disconnected those that have abused it with bit-torrent etc...
