economy run

Featured Replies

Hi all,

In a bid to see just how much i could get out of the octy (and kill time on the way to the airport after the girlfriends flight was delayed), i did an economy run from sheffield centre to east midlands airporty and back, I managed 46.8 mpg, sticking to around 60-65mph. (appart from one bit of 2nd gear shove when a BMW 3 series attempted to block me in on purpose like a kid)

Still pains me to think that i could average that in the fabia around town without trying, oh well, its not really what the octavia is for I suppose and if i wanted excellent fuel economy i should have a got a different car!

Am very impressed that it can get those sort of figures if needed though.

I did the same while touring on holiday and got 30.3mpg !!! average 22.3mpg :'( My wifes mapped bora 130 is at 57mpg average and its not much slower (290lbs :giggle: )

That's got to be one of the best mpg figures anyones got out of a Mk1 Octy VRS on here

I've never owned a diesel car but compared to the petrols I had before, the VRS is incredibly economical for a performance car. I had a 1.6 90bhp Fiesta which struggled to get above 28mpg and a 1.4 Rover which at a push would do 40mpg so getting 34-35mpg out of a 1.8 litre turbocharged engine is pretty satisfying :)

I can see a bit of a contest coming here, who can drive the most mind numbingly dull journey and get incredible mpg out of their VRS. I tried such a journey to Seaford and managed lare 30's and thought that was a great mpg but not a journey i'd like to repeat regularly. 46.8 is in a different league. Amazing

Is it all downhill or was you towed for part of the journey :giggle:

At least part of the difference between the 1.8T and the Fester has got to be how much more modern the engine is (even if it was a Fester CVH and not an Kent).

Incrediby I got 54mpg out of mine on my trip to Edinburgh last weekend. 50mph on the A1 all the way due to slow moving traffic......the IHI is more frugal at low speed than the KO3S!

Hi all.

Yes I was very impressed, and surpised.

I found it easy to get it above 35 average over the first 10m miles, then just stuck to very slight throttle changes and backing off on downhills, never dropped below 60 mph but never got above 75 either. Also looking far enough ahead to allow me to never need to brake helped im sure.

But you are right, it was very boring, and rather hard on the right leg.

I was following a coach most of the way, and he must have though I was following him (maybe plod lol)

Also saw another silver octy vrsMk1 flying along in the 3rd lane, might be someone on here?

Im not making a habit of it but its good that such a competant car when needed can achieve it.

Note: this figure was on the trip, so actual figures may be slightly less, but if we are comparing like for like it doesnt matter i guess.

Also the car has 109k so thats even more impressive!!

Cheers

Hi Hof, just noticed your post.

I can believe it, 50mph I recon is about the optimum speed for the fuel consumption on the Octy, I couldn't do that on a free flowing M1 though as its a bit dangerous LOL.

Well done!

Obviously mine's a different engine completely, but I find I average about 48mpg setting the cruise control to 75mph, but 65+ when cruise is set on 65mph. I do regular runs up and down the M1/M18 and in the summer months I average between 62 and 66mpg over 360 miles. Obviously traffic conditions affect it greatly.

You wouldn't have thought that the 10mph would make that much difference in economy, but that's my experience.

At least part of the difference between the 1.8T and the Fester has got to be how much more modern the engine is (even if it was a Fester CVH and not an Kent).

It was a Zetec in fact, so even newer than those! Only 6 years older than the 1.8T in the Octy. I think half the problem was it had been abused by previous owners and it had a silly great big exhaust on it that killed the mpg even further

this may i did swindon to the ring on one tank!! 498miles worked out at average of 42mpg with a few top end runs
