Weird whistle on cold start

Featured Replies

This is a bit of a strange one.

Since the weekend when I fiddled about in the engine bay a bit I'm getting a whistle on cold start.

It lasts maybe half a second and sounds like someone blowing a whistle. It happens once, only when cold.

On Saturday I was delving in the engine re-routing and tidying up the cables to my gauge senders. I also pulled the N249 and SAI cables back to where they emerge from behind the battery and tucked them into the cabling tray there (with resistors still attached).

So what could I have done?

starter motor? auxillary drive belt?

Hmmm, you were working mainly around the battery & nearside areas of your car?

So it wouldn't have been that you were OFFSIDE then Rob? :giggle::giggle:

Eh??

Eh??

I suspect it is a football based reference to the blowing whistle. Confused me for a while there too!

I was gonna reply saying Rob didn't mention the nearside, and NZ drives on the left so it is nearside anyway. But then I realised I'd missed the gag! I had a late night.....

Secondary air pump (or whatever it's called) starting to leak a bit?

It's a few seconds after the engine starts

That's already on the shelf in the garage :)

Brake servo whistling as the vacuum forms?

Rob have you tried starting it from cold with the air con engaged and another time with it disengaged and see if it makes a difference?

Mine makes a horrible high pitched whining noise for about ten seconds over the winter when I start it with the aircon clutch engaged but not when it's not engaged. The whining seems to disappear in the summer though :S

Will give that a go today. As it's winter here :)
