Intermittent air bag fault

Featured Replies

Hi all, odd one this and I fear something that won't be easily solved.

Every now and again (to the tune of once every week/10 days) when I start the Octy, the little orange maxidot display says "AIR BAG B. TENSIONER" (or something very similar) along with a high pitched beep.

However, after showing for literally a second or two, it disappears and no warning lights or anything are left on which leads me to believe everything is actually fine. If this is the case, has anyone any idea why the fault keeps popping up upon the engine being started. The airbag light is actually lit during this however so are all the other warning lights as so happens when we all start our cars. So I cannot tell if the light is on because of the fault or just doing the display test at ignition.

It's baffling me. I don't have vag-com, but I'm expecting everyone to suggest a vag-com diagnosis is the next step. Would you wise people recommend it be safe to drive or not? I suppose the only way of testing the air bag is total the car... Not an ideal option...

Also, which air bag is "AIR BAG B"?

Thanks all

I'm confused at this one emoticon-0112-wondering.gif

Isn't that referring to the seatbelt pre-tensioner attached to the inertia reel? That's run by the same controller that handles the airbags isn't it?

all the pre-tensioners appear to be working alright when yanked hard. Having said that, the warning doesn't stay on so I'm doubtful there is actually anything wrong. Perhaps just a poor connection or something?

The pre tensioner is the thing that pops with the airbags iirc it's some sort of ball bearing and spring thing which once popped must be replaced as the seat belts won't lock otherwise.

I think ..... lol

Thank you for that Fatty. Looks like I'll be poking around looking for poor connections etc. I've heard that it's likely the seat air bag and that over time with the seat being moved back and forth it can stress a connection or possibly break a wire. Hopefully no worse than just taking the seat out and replacing a harness.
