How much coolant?

Featured Replies

I'm shortly going to flush and replace the coolant but I'm not sure how much is actually in there.

Would 5 litres of premixed 50/50 G12++ be enough?

Thanks.

I think 4 litres would be enough. IIRC UK spec cars are filled with 30% G12++, Scandinavian countries are 40%. I think 50% is maybe a little too high, coolant performance actually drops at high concentrations.

I would query why you want to flush your coolant. Its a "lifetime" coolant fill, and I would only think it necessary to change if you have been filling it up with water or other non oem coolant (e.g. because of a leak or overfilling it to the max level - it always seems to blow off to the min level). Or if you have changed the water pump or had to drain it off for some reason. Provided the coolant still looks like the original colour (i.e. no signs of rust deposits in the expansion tank or change of colour) it should still be OK. I have a 1.9Tdi engined vehicle on original coolant (G11) after 12 years and it still looks fine.

A combination of paranoia and distrust of motor manufacturers tolerances :)

I have read in several places (and on here...I think) that it's not a bad idea to replace coolant every 3-5 years, to help keep the anticorrosion properties fresh. My car works hard...very hard, so I replace oil and filters and the like more frequently than service intervals. The way I look at it is, if it's done properly, it can't do any harm but may do some good...and it's not that expensive.
