Help - USB malfunction now none working

Featured Replies

OK I'm struggling with this one...

Father-in-law's computer that I sort out whenever we are over in Belfast.

The USB keboard and printer have been a bit hit and miss recently and over the last couple of months have not been working at all.

So I've checked thema all out with a memory stick and 1 of 6 is not working but all 6 are only working as USB 1.0's. Computer is also showing a USB malfunction despite reinstalling all drivers numerous times. Have also done a full windows update and powered the machine down overnight and uninstalled all the hubs etc. ust in case.

Any ideas as it is doing my head in!

Could be the powewr supply is playing up. In turn failing to supply the 5v (I think possibly 3v ) to the usb.

Do you have a spare psu you can try ???

Yep I might be able to 'borrow' one out of an old machine that he still has in the house somewhere... I'll have a look.

Any other ideas as everything he uses regularly is USB connected...

The only thing I can see that has changed recently is that he now has a new BT Home Hub 2 rather than his old one.

Also I've just been reminded that someone else looked at it a while ago and found an issue with the monitor he has that has two USB sockets - apparently the 'solution' was to disconnect the USB connection between the monitor and the computer so ta windows would start.

Had one like that before, would let windows install until removed the pci USB2 card, was fine after that.

Forgot to say - USB sockets are on the motherboard and case...

They could still be iffy, do you a PS2 keyboard(old type connector) you can boot with and disable the usbs for now

Yep - that's how I'm trying to sort it - got an old PS2 mouse and keyboard plugged in at the moment and trying everything I can think of but nothing seems to be working. Almost at the stage of wiping the disk and starting again but still not convinced that'll sort it.

Missing or borked drivers for a USB device?

Have reinstalled from CD for printer but it won't even recognise it. Have also upated bios etc. and monitor drivers. Will try reinstalling all of monitor software...

A quick question - if I disable the on-board USB's and fit a PCI USB problem am I likely to have the same issues as I'm now thinking this could be a quicker/easier/cheap solution.

Ta

That'd work

Providing it the actual card/port/chip on the blink and not some screwy XP wobble.

But I would be trying that if it were me :)

Ta - for the sake of a few quid I'll try it as it's costing me more time-wise than it's worth...

Failing that I feel a new £30 motherboard coming on and a couple of hours transfering components over ...

Thanks guys - up and running again now!

Cool

Was it the card that fixed it ??

yep - £7 and sorted!

Only problem now is a DVD drive with no sound on movies, despite adding an audio link from the drive to the motherboard but I ran out of time to fix it... (ferry to catch)

I dont think DVD audio uses the audio cable from the DVD drive.

I dont think DVD audio uses the audio cable from the DVD drive.

Now that could explain it - any ideas on how to fix it for the next time I visit and get the chance?
