air filter query for octy mk2 vrs

Featured Replies

Hello, I have recentley purchased a VRS, so far im very happy with it, today spent hours cleaning it and making it shiney i wanted to ask peoples opinions... i was thinking of replacing the standard air filter and just buy a pipercross or k&n air filter (the ones that just are a direct replacement) which drop into the standard housing but was looking over DPM Performance and saw this

air intake

Or i was just going to buy a pipercross for £35 off eBay delivered, i dont want to do too many modifications and start pulling items out of the engine bay but i would think that looking at the air intake is a simple task as long as your not replacing the whole standard housing, so is that what the above does?

Opinions please

Look forward to hearing your responses - Ryan

That looks like a Carbonio clone!

If you read around most of the VAG forums a performance filter element is a favourite option. There used to be a load of threads on here about the various different panel type ones.

As I understand it, air intakes like the one on your link (make of carbon fibre) are poor conductors of heat. So there is an argument that such an intake will prevent the heat from the engine bay warming up the intake air, thus giving an element of Cold Air Induction.

However, at that sort of price, AFAIK, you won't realise much more power that with the improved filter element in the standard housing. I'd probably go for the £35 element, and save the £145! Especially if you say you aren't intending to do much more modification!

HTH

Get one if you want some throaty(ish) engine noise and as already been said, not much else ;)

well i just dont to be do major changes to the car uncle bulgaria, what changes have you done to your VRS?

nar wouldnt wanna buy one just for engine noise lol i just wondered if it made a performance difference but dont seem like it does, cheers

MIGHT improve throttle response and give a few bhp, but i'd go for the panel if your not planning to do much............both have "minimal" gains

what options are there vRS Dovit and costs?

Ah, well mines been a bit of a "work in progress" ever since I got it :giggle: I always knew I was going to do a bit of modification!

A search on here will tell you that i've modified the brakes, suspension, lower engine mount, induction system, exhaust, intercooler & had a couple of re-maps on the way, (to name but a few)!!!

Couldn't tell you what the figures are as these days, as i've not been near a set of rollers for ages, but i've always opted for lower outputs and longevity/usability/drivability as against ultimate performance, as it's still a family/work car!

I've still a few little bits I want to do, but there is no rush & they are not going to have any real effect on performance!

A search on hear will give you a good idea of what modifications suit the Octy and what you can expect to gain from them.

Just remember that any "performance enhancing" modifications should be notified to your insurers  then enjoy!

You COULD look at a BMC cda £150+ (closed induction kit) or stick to a panel filter £35+ Not sure who all makes them but the likes of K&N, Piperx, Green, BMC(think they might do a panel one too)......................

rought guess at the prices

There is one of them for sale on the mk5 golf gti forum, won't make much power difference though.
