Is it worth decating a fabia vrs

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

As the title says really; is it worth doing for the money paid?

Thanks :)

Well it will be a hassle come MOT time and you have to put it back on. Even more of a hassle for my decatted Atom since I don't have a catalyst!

Drj, diesel engines pass MOT without a cat, as it's actually called a paracite filter, and isn't tested for.

I'm more interested in performance vs cost, and weather it's a good mod to make.

Thanks :)

There's a few topics popping around lately on decat's and from what I've gathered its worthwhile mod imo.

From others they've said it helps throttle response more than power hike.

I am relatively ignorant re what use diesels may have for catalysts. But a catalyst isn't a particulate filter (in the context of a filter being a substance that takes particles out of an exhaust stream). I presume it burns them up... Are you sure it has no functionality re emissions and what's tested at MOT?

I have no immediate experience in this topic, it is just what I have been told and researched on this website, so I could quite easily be wrong, and misunderstood details. Maybe a techie could give us the lowdown?

Thankyou for your input :)

Yes doesnt need it for mot.

I have a straight through pipe frm turbo, and even though performance seems to be slightly up (a little more responsive). After 3k its very loud, if you dont like the 'boom' noise i wouldnt get what i have.

Here's mine.. £30

http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_740.htm and scroll down to part B. As you'll see, there is no emissions test on a diesel that the presence or absence of a catalytic convertor could affect.

As others, decatting will improve spool-up; you might get more power too, if you want to tune to the extent of Jason's (DevonUtopia) mongrel.

Hey pip, thanks for the pic, when you say straight through from turbo - does this mean you've removed the backbox too?

Yeah, i've had the back box removed for about 8 months. This was perfect to be fair, not loud, until you boot it and i t sounded great (see youtube link in my signature)

Then about 3 weeks ago i got the cat removed, it does sound awesome, but its a lout 'boom' after 3k. doesn't sound like a diesel though

Do the de cat. I did and it deffo made it breath much better in the higher rev range and prolly pulls a bit harder to

from what ive read on here a personnal experience, standard car + decat = good, car already mapped then adding the decat after can = bad, all these storys about decats popping the turbo i think is a myth, they were probably on there way out before. i have run decats on three vag cars with no probs, an my old diesel octy is on 40k+ with a decat, still on original turbo at 140k

im running a stage 2 turbo dynamics pd150 with a milltek celi 100 cat and cat back....

now this system is bigger than that of the magnex decat...

magnex is 2.25" and milltek is 2.5"

anyone else ever notice that?

is standard system 2.25" also?

Ive noticed my straight through (2.25") which is standard spec sounded crap compared to a full system of the same but 2.5". Wierd but the 0.25" made all the differance.

My cars just sailed it's MOT last week with a De cat on it. Imo the de cat was the best thing i done to the car, turbo spool is alot quicker and you can feel the extra little push it gives. But i wouldn't reccomend doing it on an un mapped car

yup i had a magnex decat to go on in place of my milltek cat

only to find the milltek dwarfs the magnex and oem system B)

I have a custom de cat along with a custom system. Gonna get the tail pipe changed soon though as i find the 6x3 oval i have doesn't fill the gap as nice as a 6x4 or a twin 3" would

but its a loud 'boom' after 3k. doesn't sound like a diesel though

Surely you should have :D :D :D:thumbup:  after that statement?

Yeh exactly lol

The amount of people who find it hard to believe my VRS is still/is a diesel is un real!

I've been asked at a small jap meet how much it cost to have a 1.8 20vt fitted. :giggle:

They recon they could hear a dump valve

My car makes a wastegate chatter noise if you dump the clutch at a certain amount of revs

Yeh exactly lol

Is this your car mate by any chance?

Sure is mate yeh
