I have a 2004 Octavia that I have had for a couple of years now. Recently the electrics have been playing up. The door sensors are not picking up the doors are shut so the interior light stays on. Also the boot catch only works from time to time which makes driving on the motorway interesting when the boot won't lock. Has anyone else had these problems? I’m not keen to take it to a dealer as they will no doubt charge me to look into it and I want a bit of info so I know what I’m looking at.

Hi Jake, as a rule about 99% of all car electrics problems are caused by a bad earth, especially when the car is a few years old. If you can get access to wiring diagram it should be pretty easy to find out which earth is starting to rust but failing that try to trace the wiring from the boot release relay, you should find the earth close by. I do not know the Octavia but if the boot has a key as well as the remote release why not just pull the fuse or remove the relay. It wont fix it but it will not open unexpectedly. Best of luck and let me know how you get on. Robin.

Hello and welcome.

First place I would look is behind the carpet on the left hand side of the boot (pass side). There are a group of connectors there that also have the rear screenwash pipe with them. This quite often comes apart and soaks the connectors and causing connection issues. As the boot and related CDL wiring goes through these plugs its a good place to start.
