"Medium" on the front might be illegal

"Current UK law (2006) states that rear side windows and the back window can be tinted as required. Tinting of the windscreen must allow at least 75% light transmission. This is 70% in the case of the front side windows."

iirc most cars nowadays have already the legal limit for fronts. 30-35%? I know mines got a slight green tint.

its illegal to have anything on the front but who cares i've got 50% on the front and limo 5% on the back i'll uload a pic for you!

As a motorcyclist I certainly DO care that you're driving an illegal vehicle with restricted visibility!!!

Crackdown on tinted car windows

Cars with tinted windows will be targeted by roadside inspectors in a nationwide crackdown on road safety.

Police and the Department of Transport are worried drivers' vision is being impaired by windows which are darker than the legal limit.

Spot checks using light meters will find out if cars meet regulations stating windscreens must let in 75% of light and side windows 70%.

It is the first time the checks have been carried out across the UK.

The new checks have been added to the standard roadside checks carried out by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency.

The agency was first asked to inspect cars with tinted windows last year by North Wales police after a motorcyclist died in an accident allegedly involving a car with tinted windows.

A VOSA spokeswoman said many drivers did not realise their vision was "significantly impaired" by tinted glass.

She told BBC News Online: "The issue is something we've been aware of for some time.

"Once we had helped North Wales police with their checks we realised it was quite a wide ranging issue."

Prohibition orders

VOSA inspectors can issue prohibition orders forcing unfit cars to be towed away until the necessary adjustments have been made.

An AA spokeswoman said the motoring organisation welcomed the move.

She said: "In the current climate, where people who are banned drivers can hide behind tinted windows so the police can't recognise them, this is a positive step."

The pedestrian or cyclist you run over because they cannot see that you haven't seen them.

Nice reasoning. You must have fantastic visibility at night .... keep eating those carrots. :giggle:

it does look good, however it must impair your vision somewhat, even if you have 20/20 vision! and even more so at night!

However my argument is they go out of their way for this, and yet there are more and more old people driving who cannot see and in some cases even drive correctly...When are they going to clamp down on this? Seems hypocritical of the goverment tbh (no suprises there though!)

Pensioner runs over OAP

Drives wrong way up M6

Wrong way around M25

Reversed over another pensioner

all I did was search BBC news for OAP crash...

when i search, window tint accident or somthing similar, heres what i got

Police checks...

Tints cause accidents

and much more of the same thing....cant say as there are any results of direct tint related accidents...

However my argument is they go out of their way for this, and yet there are more and more old people driving who cannot see and in some cases even drive correctly.

I understand your point, but the excessive tinting is a modification that impairs everybodies ability to see out of the vehicle no matter how good their eyesight is. This isn't a defect of the person, it is a defect of the vehicle.

The easiest way to ensure that vehicles are compliant with the relevant legislation is to introduce a check of the glazing into the annual MoT test. After all the windscreen is already inspected for physical defects and damage.

Whether or not people's ability to drive safely should be re-tested at a certain age is a whole other argument.

Best regards

Yes it is, but my point is its a whole UK clamp down on tinting, that although I agree impairs vision, which as a direct result causes accidents ( which surely is the main point here, not the asthetics?) why isnt there a UK clamp down on making sure older people are driving to current UK regulations. Tests were different that many years ago, not to mention the volume of vehicles on the road throw there own own physical problems in to the mix and you have a reciepe for disaster. Its not wonder it causes more accidents, but whats being done about it? it appears to be causing more accidents than window tints? That was my point...anyways rant over lol. Im not disputing your point, I just think its OTT considering there are other ways they could reduce accidents.

There is a simple answer to this. The relative tinting/visibility of vehicle glazing is specified by existing legislation, the current ability/skill of drivers who met the requirements of less sophisticated driving tests at the time they took them is not. I agree that the current system can be perceived as being imperfect, very few things in life aren't. You can always lobby your MP.

That said I am sure it is within the power of the courts to impose a compulsory re-test where in their opinion the current ability/skill of a driver is in question following an incident. People with tinted car windows and free bus passes included. :)

Rather than a discussion, can we not just have pictures?

:)

Like this?

(I'm not saying this was caused by illegally tinted windows but it illustrates the potential consequences...)
