Don't which TDI to buy...................Help

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone

I have owned skodas for about 20 yrs, great cars!!!

Now my delema, Currently I have a Fabia 1992 (52) 1.9 TDI 110 hp.

I prefer Diesel ..... so not sure if the 1.6 TDI 75 hp will have enough poke or will it be to differenct with what I have at present.? (This does seem to be the more economical with road tax and insurance group etc)

Also does the cant deciede between the SE or Elegance!! does the SE have ESP etc?

Or should I go for the 90 hp?

Help pls?

Hello :)

You'll probably see a lot of difference with the 75hp engine, the 90 would be better, the 105 would feel the same as you have now. All of them will be in the £35 road tax bracket.

Unfortunately the SE and Elegance do not come with ESP as standard, both will have ABS. I went for the Elegance because of the VAT discount, otherwise I would have gone for the SE.

are they basically the same engine, in which case can you map a 75bhp to give 90 or 105?

Hi

Thanks for that, do you think there is much difference in the insurance?, will thethe elegance hold the price better?

Thanks again

The insurance is cheaper on the 75 & 90 ps engines, but it's only a little bit more for the 105ps engine. In reality, and you know this I'm sure, it very much depends on your own driving record and the type of use and mileage you put the car into. For example I pay less for my own vehicle for fully comp with all the whistles and bells than my colleague who has a less powerful 1.2htp Skoda petrol engined version of my car. We are the same age, no accidents etc etc and live in the same postcode. Both cars garaged. And, unlike me, he doesn't have any named drivers on his policy and no legal cover either, yet I am paying much less to insure mine than he is. So I wouldn't worry about the insurance too much. You can usually find what you are looking for especially if you use your computer...that Meerkat firm are pretty good!! The Elegance wil probably command a slightly higher resale but this tails off as the years go by.

there is no road tax on the 75bhp, and its 20 quid next year, drives lovely

Ordered an Elegance TSI (85) model for my wife, due to the 0% finance offer which is not available on the SE. Financially appeared to make more sense as the interest you would pay on a normal loan equated to a good part of the difference between SE an Elegance.

Also like some of the features on the Elegance such as the parking sensors, front fogs with DRL and an instrument panel with a 'proper' temp gauge. Only thing were not so keen on are the 16" rims and wide low profile tyres, not really suitable for the rural roads we have round here. Had to order as likewise ESP for us is a must have item, went for the ESP Plus option with HHC an TPM.

Hoping she was built this week just gone; spoke to the dealer yesterday and they were a little unsure, other than to say delivery is still expected for mid September.

In respect of which diesel probable the 90bhp model would be my choice, based on my wife's current car a Corsa CDTI (90) which has proved more than adequate for day to day driving.

Hi Fab, yes, they are basically the same engines and all of them can be mapped. Not much point in buying a new 75bhp version though and mapping it. You don't save any money doing it that way over buying a new more powerful model. The reasons for this are...the cost of the remapping service and setting it up, the cost of declaring that you have modded your motor to your insurance company, who immediately will charge you more than for just insuring a standard 90 or 105bhp motor. And that's just because it's now a non-standard modded motor. Also any effect this might have on your warranty. I intended to chip my 1.4TDI to 110bhp...the cost was cheapish to do, just £190, but my insurers wanted to double my premium. This meant my total cost to gain 30 horses and around 28nm extra of torque would have been over £600 plus loss of warranty. I Know, not really expensive but didn't want to lose my warranty. Interesting though.

I test drove a 75 bhp Diesel Fabia and found it pretty gutless with the intention of buying a 90bhp, but at the end od the day, the 105 was only £180 extra and would give the same performance of my current Octavia.

Ordered in the middle of July and still no delivery date except build week 35, if Im lucky!!!

Regards

Grahame

90PS goes very well, and the 105PS feels rather rapid!

Unless you are doing a fair few miles consider the TSi engines as they are very torquey and diesel like to drive but a little cheaper.
