100K Mile Service

Featured Replies

Can anyone advise of things that may need to be or should be changed at the 100k mile mark, that would not normally be included in a regular service. Although I have the car on variable servicing as I do about 30k miles a year, 90% of which is motorway, I still change the oil every 10k. The car is a 1.9tdi awx engined 53 plate superb elegance. I seem to remember someone say something about one of the pullies should be changed but can't remember which one.

Thanks

Alternator pulley. I would also take a careful look at both aux belt idlers - check the bearings carefully for slack.

Consider changing the gearbox oil, also the PAS fluid. Use the correct VAG specified lubricants. I'm assuming cambelt changes are up to date and that a metal impeller water pump has been fitted. Free off the front suspension and trackrod pinch bolts if you can (it may be too late) as suspension renewal will not be far off.

Ensure plenum bungs are out and that the pollen filter outer seal has been replaced with mastic strip. Oil the wiper spindle bearings - preferably remove the arms (puller needed if not previously removed) and release the circlips on the shafts so that they can be fully oiled over their length.

Buy a Japanese car next time so you don't have to spend time working around all of these design defects.

Thanks Roto.

I'll have the gearbox oil & PAS fluid done when it goes in next. The timing belt is up to date but not sure about the metal impeller water pump, as ive only had the car from 70k. Is there anyway of telling visually?

Thanks

If you unclip the upper cambelt cover (release front of top engine cover first) you can see the water pump. The one I removed from my AWX had VAG part number 038 121 019D marked on the pump body together with the VW and Audi trade marks. It also had a 4 spoke wheel with the VW mark near the centre. The pattern pump I fitted had a solid wheel.

To be absolutely fair to VAG, the pump I removed was in perfect condition, but as they chose to drive it from the cambelt, specifying a breakable impeller which loosens from the shaft represents a design stupidity. The track record of these pumps is not good - if the impeller breaks, the cambelt can be stripped or thrown off, wrecking the engine.

If you have the time to rectify all the design sillies on the Superb, it's a very good long term runner and the AWX is by far the best of the bunch. I am absolutely amazed that VAG had the cheek to produce the Superb with all of the known defects of the old Passat. The plenum chamber flooding makes the car potentially unsafe as built. No more money to VAG from me.
