noisy tapetts(?) on my Golf, how easy is it fix myself?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a 1989 Golf Cabriolet until I buy my furby vrs :P I need to get her up together for selling on and at the moment the tapetts (sorry, not sure on the spelling) are noisy on starting until it warms up.

Can anyone advise me as to whether this is gonna be expensive, easy to do myself or my husband to do, or whether it's better to leave it to the garage. i did use some kind of engine flush once that help to quiet them for a while but that was ages ago and I havn't found it in Halfords since. i also use magnetec oil but it doesnt make any difference, it's driving me mad I just need something to work until i can get it sorted.

Cheers Pixi :P

Pretty sure that comes under the "they all do that category"...know they do on my Octy...

Rob.

What engine is it?

If its the 8 valve unit then they have shims to adjust the clearance. This requires the correct tool to push down the tappet and slide out the shim, and of course a new set of shims.

Hiya,

It is the 8 valve as it is the 1.8 clipper cabriolet. Didn't know anything about the shims, is it gonna cost me an arm and a leg?

I'm off to Edinburgh today to celebrate new year, so I won't be able to respond to anymore helpful hints until i arrive home next week.

Happy new year to everyone

Pix ;)

An 8valve of that age has hydraulic tappets and they are basically suffering oil starvation. They indeed all do that and there have been many suggested cures over the years, but I'm not sure if any have been successful long term.

Try clubgti.com/forum to see if any one can help, I bet they will come back with loads of suggestions!
