Considering Yeti: questions

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm thinking of buying a Yeti and would appreciate guidance from current owners on a number of points:

1. I'd like a diesel engine, DSG 'box and 4x4. So currently that's the 140 CR TDi model. Will a 170bhp version be brought out, and if so, when? Or will that combination of engine, box and drive be offered on the Superb?

2. Is the optional satnav as good as the in-built, DVD-driven one in my 2007 BMW 1-series, or better? Or is in inferior in any way?

3. Does the Bluetooth work reliably with a BlackBerry Bold 9700, including transferring the phone numbers (I would of course set up a filter to reduce the number)

4. Can the Columbus satnav control an iPod, in the sense of being able to select playlists, albums, tracks etc using the touch-screen in the car, rather than the iPod itself?

5. I live on high ground, and the main reason for wanting 4x4 is that we can get snowed in during the winter, not because the snow is very heavy but because there's a big steep hill from us to civilization that the gritters sometimes can't fix in the winter. Would the Yeti in its hill descent mode be able to handle this?

6. Does anyone yet have the 140 CR TDi DSG 4x4 Elegance, and if so, how many MPG does it deliver in real-world driving? Do Yetis generally achieve the official combined figure?

7. Do dealers offer a fixed-price servicing pack, ie pay £250 or so and you're covered for the first three years?

8. Do the dealers offer servicing and repairs while you wait on Saturdays, ie BMW-standard service? I'm thinking particularly of Crawley Down and SG Smith Croydon, as they're the nearest to me

9. How long can I get from a set of tyres? (Mainly motorway driving)

Many thanks :-)

A good set of questions.

My Yeti is being collected on a '60' plate on 1st Sept so I cant answer any questions

The 170 HP 2.0 CR Diesel is available now and is also available with 4wd in the Superb.

2. Is the optional satnav as good as the in-built, DVD-driven one in my 2007 BMW 1-series, or better? Or is in inferior in any way? I do not know the BMW, but the Columbus works well.3. Does the Bluetooth work reliably with a BlackBerry Bold 9700, including transferring the phone numbers (I would of course set up a filter to reduce the number) Don't know. I have a Parrot attached to the Columbus.

4. Can the Columbus satnav control an iPod, in the sense of being able to select playlists, albums, tracks etc using the touch-screen in the car, rather than the iPod itself? I do not think so.

The 4wd Yeti will handle it. You do not really need the Off Road buttion for that, BUT YOU WILL NEED WINTER TYRES,

6. Does anyone yet have the 140 CR TDi DSG 4x4 Elegance, and if so, how many MPG does it deliver in real-world driving? Do Yetis generally achieve the official combined figure? No cars achieve the standard test values, but I get better than 46 mpg in my everyday driving with the 170.

7. Do dealers offer a fixed-price servicing pack, ie pay £250 or so and you're covered for the first three years? Yes they do, but I don't know the cost.

8. Do the dealers offer servicing and repairs while you wait on Saturdays, ie BMW-standard service? I'm thinking particularly of Crawley Down and SG Smith Croydon, as they're the nearest to me. Ask the dealer!

9. How long can I get from a set of tyres? (Mainly motorway driving) There are too many variables in this - driving style, inflation, load etc. I expect to get 20,000 miles from mine.

Many thanks :-)

Can't answer them all, but my blackberry worked fine, all the addresses transferred seamlessly once I paired it with the car.

I personally use a tom-tom, works fine for me, is updated everytime I plug it into the computer, and saves hundreds of pounds upfront. I don't see how any built in system can be that easy to update, and there have been people on the forum complaining that their not so recent house and street was not in the built in database. Helped me in nottingham recently as well as a tom tom can also navigate for you when you are on foot, as you can take it with you, and the map on an address I was given was completely wrong, but I had the postcode of where I needed to get to after using the park and ride.

I understand the ipod will work if you can pair it to the car via bluetooth, as the relevant connector is not availble in the uk. It can be fitted retrospectively though.

My 2 wheel drive diesel is averaging 50 on the maxidot, i would have expected the 4x4 to be around 4 to 5mpg less and this is one of the reasons I went for the 2 wheel drive, in addition to the massive saving on company car taxes. My car is economical off the motorwayand and quickly reaches 50+ on rural roads and congestion free commuting but motorway speeds seem to kill the economy, probably due torelatively poor aerodynamics. Just running at a true 73 from the satnav compared to an indicated 70 from the speedo(around 66mph) knocks 3 to 4 mpg off the average quite quickly.

You cant beat physics, hill descent will not stop a car on sheet ice, just controls the car as best it can using 100% of the grip available.

My local dealer does saturday servicing, but it needs booking a long way ahead

I have used both Crawley down and SG smith, but ordered my yeti from James at Allams in Epsom. I will use Allams for servicing as well. Both the others were ok, Crawley Down diagnosing a DMF problem with my octavia wheras as local so called vw specialist, pini motors couldn't tell me without removing engine and thought it might be gearbox.

The columbus unit is very good. I have one, but no car to put it in now, but will have to sell it as it wont work properly in yeti as fw is too old. Can't comment on 1 series, but the columbus is better in my opinion than the professional one in a '55plate 535d msport I had for a few weeks. It is touch screen for starters, not that awful i drive which on the 2 5 series I have had access to, stopped working.

The new ones with latest maps & fw are excellent, and i found it invaluable in that i didn't have to fiddle around with tomtom kits and my iphone every time i got in the car on a new trip.

The tmc is pretty good, but not as good as tomtom's traffic.

I too am waiting for my CR140DSG to arrive. Not sure that anybody on the forum yet has one, but they are just about to come out. Seeing as they weren't available until may to order, and 16-20 weeks without a hole in the roof, for delivery, they will start to filter through very soon.

The DSG box is excellent, I did 38,000 miles in under 2 years in one and thought it was better than my 5 series auto box. The CR engines are proven.

I ordered one without test driving one but I have test driven a 1.8tsi & 110 2wd both manuals.

Mike
