90k service

Featured Replies

And so to my first post.

I have just bought am 04 Vrs and it has a full skoda services, but due its 90k services, I have a good friend who is a mechanic, who checked the car out before I bought it. To keep the service history up to date I have decided to take it to a Skoda dealer. They are going to charge 127 pounds, is this a fair price?

Thanks in advance

Dave

Unless it's also an anniversary, 90k is just an oil change. GBP127 is OK for a dealer, I suppose, but you have to ask yourself why you're maintaining FSSH on a car so far out of warranty. You won't get a better service at a dealer than you will at a VAG specialist, and the extra few hundred quid you might keep on the value of the car when you come to sell it may well be swallowed up by more expensive garage bills...

Hi Davey,

At the moment mate we are offering a steal price on servicing :D

I agree. When i got mine at 110k i had already decided i wasnt going to bother keeping the Skoda history up. I paid about £60 for the same as your being quoted for, and at that age, and mileage, a decent VAG Indi on the service book will be no worse. Also, im not saying that they are all bad, but you hear some real horror stories on here about some dealers. Indi`s need to keep a good rep to keep punters coming back, unlike skoda!

My vRS is also on 90k (done 30k in it now), I do the 10k intervals -oil and filters myself but use my local Indi' (Volks-tek in Dronfield) to do the Major ones. As my car is modified and a relative early high miler I figured it just wasn't worth using a dealer. Is it just me that finds an oil change therapeutic and somewhat cleansing???

The Skoda servicing strategy is curious - and your car falls into the trap having done 15,000 miles pa.

A car doing 10,000 miles per year needs an Inspection service annually - costing around £180-200

A car doing 20,000 miles per year needs an Oil change at 6 months (I've not had one of these but £127 sounds the right sort of level) and an Inspection service annually

However a car doing 15,000 miles gets confused. In theory after EIGHT months it should have an Oil change then after another FOUR months it should have an Inspection service. No ones going to service a car like that.

With my previous car I was initially doing around 15,000 miles pa. I elected to do the sensible thing and just have an Inspection service every 10,000 miles. That's logically how yours has been done too.

Hence you should be looking at an Inspection service at around £180-200 not the Oil change one you may have been quoted for.

For my new car I've bought a £299 two year service deal - this excludes the cambelt but should include the brake fluid change required every two years - which your car potentially also needs at a cost of around £40. So I should be saving around £100 on the deal.

My last Inspection/Brake service cost £235 from memory...

Yeah, 15k p.a. is a funny one. I've averaged 16-17k p.a. over the six years I've had the car, so have an inspection service once a year and an oil change every 6 months. This is probably not quite as economical mile-for-mile as having an inspection service every 10k, but means it gets a full service the same day as the MoT, and also makes sure things like brake fluid changes get done at the right time...

Whatever suits you best, of course, but (once again) I really wouldn't bother with the dealer on a car that age!

Them's nearly main dealer prices? Local VW dealer had 50 off me for a brake fluid change. Inspection service was less than a ton. Play a few dealers off against each other and you'll be surprised!

They are much cheaper than dealer prices!

I have seen places quote £150 just for an oil and filter change and some other places charging up to £260 for a full service!!!

A friend of mine that is back in Sheffield had a brake fluid change and got charged close to £80 for the service!! :(
