What increase in insurance premium for remap?

Featured Replies

I'm seriously considering the stage 1 remap and free STS offer from Shark Performance but I'm just wondering how much my insurance would increase by. Can anyone give me any idea about roughly how much extra I'd have to pay? I realise this probably depends on a number of different factors (including who you're insured with), but it would be really useful to know roughly what to expect. I'm going to give my insurers a bell and ask them but I want to know what other people are paying first so I know whether I'm getting bongoed or not.

Thanks

depends, the biggest factor is the insurance company your with. a non modifying friendly company will put on ridiculous premium for a remap. a company like adrian flux and chris knott who specialise in modified cars will hardly put any premium on top.

put this way the cheapest quote on compare the market.com for a vRS was only £135 cheaper than my quote from adrian flux running stage 2+ remap, intake, exhasut, coilovers, arb's, anti lift kit and brakes etc.

IME, most 'big name' insurers won't touch a remapped car in the North West. If they do, chances are the policy will be underwritten by Highway, which is a not-direct-to-public part of LV. Under these circumstances, you're best off going to a broker like Chris Knott or Adrian Flux (both site sponsors), although Brentacre were the only ones who'd actually cover me. I need cover for business use, though, which seems to be a pretty unusual request for a modified car owner to make...

U need to phone your insurance and get a quote!

Just for info:

Co-op insurance who sent me a nice postcard telling me that they can save me £££'s on my present insurer will not quote for modified cars.

My insurance is with Chris Knott and have 6 months (ish ) left before renewal. I called the other day and they quoted a cost of £45 for a power increase of 25% (200bhp to 250bhp ish) this included £10 admin charge so I am happy with that. Yes I am getting the shark sts gb. :)

I was paying about £200 insurence for my 1.8 TSi, after the remap my insurer (Swiftcover) refused to cover it so I moved to RAC insurance arranged through GoCompare which cost £270. The difference in premium between a standard car and a remapped one was about £30. GoCompare allows you to easily declare common modifications by ticking boxes, so I just ticked modifed ECU - they don't seem interested in how much extra power the remap gives.

Ahem ........ about time as well , what happened to "i dont need extra power " then Ed

Elephant and Admiral (same company) will cover modified cars though I was with Elephant when I got the remap and they wouldn't keep insuring me despite the fact I could get an online quote from them with the remap details. I got fed up of talking to their call centre and ending up going with the cheapest - Admiral (same company, remember!)

Anyhoo, my premium went from £290 to £330 ish with performance air filter (came as part of the remap package) and 11-25% remap declared. This year that's gone up to £353 on my renewal and that's the cheapest by a long way so I'm sticking with Admiral.

When I tried Adrian Flux last year they wanted silly money. I also got through to a trainee who didn't understand some of the tricky technical terms such as "BHP" and "remap" so that didn't inspire confidence. Chris Knott never called me back despite saying they would on three occasions. Specialists my aunt...

It was about an extra £50 or so with Tesco for my remap

That's exactly the same experience that I had, on both counts.....massive quote from Adrian Flux and no call back from Chris Knott <sigh>

When I tried GoCompare and specified a modified ECU, my cheapest quote jumped from £500 to £900.

I'm 37 years old and in last 5 years I've had one accident (non-fault), one speeding fine (SP30) and I have lots of years no-claims too but I still get huge premiums quoted....I guess it's living in a Manchester postcode that really does the damage!!!

Try Brentacre they halved my insurance over Chris Knott and have only quote an additional £95 for the year for a remap

Ouch! Our circumstances are fairly similar (age 39, one SP30, no accidents) except I live in Fife - guess its compensation for the 8 month winters and generally miserable weather.

Is Manchester really that bad? Sounds like insurers have put it in the same risk category as Iraq!

It would seem Manchester is indeed the new Bagdad!!

When I tried Chris Knott, the lady I spoke to asked me what my postcode was and I got as far as saying "M" and she stopped me.....said none of their insurers would touch M postcodes!!! Guess I need to move to Fife.....although my commuting time would take a bit of a hit! :giggle:

From my experience, postcode does seem to be the single most important factor to determine your insurance premium.

When I moved from Chester to the centre of Manc, my ins almost doubled, despite the fact the car was stored in a secure car park underneath an apartment block, and then when we moved from Manc up to Ilkley, it more or less halved again.
