Slips out of 5th Gear

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have had problems with my gearbox, I am currently on holiday in Devon and last Sunday I was in Cornwall when the gearbox packed up. I had the RAC come out and they took me to a local garage apparently a ball bearing had come out which resulted in major oil leak and then gearbox gave up.

So needed new gearbox and new clutch because the old clutch got damaged due to the oil leak.

I have had a reconditioned gearbox fitted but when I put the car into 5th gear it stays there for a short while (longest was for half a mile) then it slips out of gear.

Can this be due to the reconditioned gearbox??

I'm unable to take the car back to the original garage as I am driving home tomorrow, I have a 320 mile journey which will be done mainly in 4th gear. I will take the car to a local Unipart garage though as the garage in cornwall was Unipart and apparently i can take it to any unipart garage when new parts are in warranty

Hi mate can you hold it in 5th gear? also do you know for certian its a reconditioned box? not just a box from a breakers?

could be 5th gear syncro. no need for the box to come out just end casing off and change. usually what happens as the teeth get damaged and cant fully mesh together hence it popping out.

let us know how you get on

chris

Could be badly adjusted linkage, reverse usually jumps out also.

I have tried to hold it 5th but it still just comes out.

I am hoping that today is a new day and it may not slip out of gear but I guess that thise chances are slim to none.

When I get back home I'll re-post and let you know how its all gone and when I get it into a local Unipart garage.

Well I managed to get back home and I still had problems with the 5th gear. When ever I took my foot slightly off the accelerator it would slip out of gear I had to then put it back to 4th then into 5th again. It became a bit of a pain but I will take it to the local unipart garage on Tuesday I just hope they dont try and charge me for new parts
