Gearbox question

Featured Replies

Evening All!

Managed to get my Pickup reanimated- took longer than hoped- doesn't it always! Passed Mot with flying colours..

on my way back to Berlin- 75 miles off the ferry in Belgium I lost drive in 5th Gear.... No leaks all other gears ok..

well being stuck between a rock and a hard place I took the chance and drove the remaining 500ish miles to Berlin (at a reduced speed)- where I now am..

Having spent some time searching topic on here I would guess it's the 32mm nut holding the 5Th gear in place that has loosened.

Questions:

Can I viably get to the end cover of the gearbox with the box in situ?( I have a jack and tools - but my workshop is back in Devon :(

After 500 + miles Have I effectively wreaked the gearbox and any chance of refitting/ tightening the 32mm nut??

I have a spare gearbox back in Devon.. just wondering if I can fix this one in situ or if I'm better off getting the other box over and swapping it over..?

Thoughts and suggestions please!!

Cheers

Steve

personally for the sake of a gearbox worth less than my £5 asda trainers, i would just drive it home and not use 5th gear

Yes, you can do it in situ, it's a 15-minute job. Just support the box's weight using a bit of wood and a jack, and you can let it down enough to get the bolts out and take the cover off then do both nuts up.

Cheers All!

Took the end cap of the box to discover all nuts were tight! :S

on closer inspection seems the 5th speed output gear has stripped the teeth on the shaft... So back to Plan B as Teflon Tom suggested- drive home in 4th!!

oh well never mind.. .. only over here for another 7 weeks- I'm sure it'll survive that long!

Thanks anyway guys!

Steve

i've got a 1.6 felicia gearbox here, you can pick it up on the way through
