Air box modification

Featured Replies

Right...replacing the K and N panel filter with the green cotton one. I have read here before about the air box modificatio what I wanted to know is:

[1] Is it worth it?

[2] The benefits?

[3] Is it an easy job?

[4] Exactly how to do it (Idiots guide please). What tools needed etc.?

Thanks in advance...

Mmmm IMHO no. Too much work for nothuing. No real gains.

All it is is the small fins inside the box need cutting out with wire snips then smoothing off with sand paper or similar. Again a lot of work for nothing as the std box flows fine. Even the std paper filter is fine and flows enough, (till it gets a bit dirty) the main restriction is the pipe from wing to box. That's what needs improving,

I had my old box back on just to see what it was like as the PX filter I had on my cai was crap. I thought the std box was just the same till I got a K&N filther for it, now It is sooooo much better.

Good luck with it mate I'm sure there will be a few along who will say the std box is better, but after trying it myself I can say otherwise.

DONT!!!

The vanes inside the airbox are there to improve airflow.

apparantly

The veins are not a by product of manufacture or for rigidity. The box is plenty strong and those veins actually make manufacture harder. They help to slow down swirls of air ready to be sucked in through the trumpet before the maf. That way the air currents are as straight as they can be in order to get a reliable maf reading. Swirls make for a bad reading.

The only bit that is a restriction is the section from the box to the wing, this is designed to keep the intake quiet and you can swap this for a bit of 3" dia pipe.

I'm running 325bhp on the standard box that has been modded to take a 3" maf (using S3 trumpet) with a Piper X filter and 3" intake pipe.

Easy to do just use a sharp knife or a chisel and hammer and tap down the fins, then use sandpaper to smooth the leftover bits.

I also drilled holes on the underneath of the airbox to get more cool air in from underneath and also added a 3" tubing from airbox to front bumper and a green panel air filter.

Performance gains are marginal if not at all to be honest, some folks may say they had a little gain.

I think the 3" tubing make a bit of difference.

I ended up fitting a ABD CAI kit when i got it mapped.

will try and dig out some pics fitted.

Thanks for the input...looks like you spent quite a lot of time and care doing that.

yep I did and also spent quite a bit of time feeding the 3" pipe into it instead of the airbox using the inner wing plastic pipe.

It also provoked quite a bit of noise over standard

i took the pipe going into the airbox in the above pic out too
