'02 RS. Should electric fans run from cold?

Featured Replies

Hi

(Sorry for all the questions.)

Should the electric cooling fans be running with the engine on but cold & the car stationary?

I have a problem with my '02 RS. It is very rough running from cold, with symptoms as described in this thread.

As I had a 17705 error I had the bonnet opening listening for leaks. The car had only been running for seconds but I noticed both electric fans were running.

Now this could tie in nicely with Bowders' tip about the coolant sensor in the above linked thread but I was wondering if perhaps the fans run when the car is stationary even if it's cold?

Thanks

Darren

Yes, they will run if the climatronic system is set to any setting other than econ since the fans are used to keep the compressor for the A/C cool.

Tried this today. Started car with 'ECON' selected & fans didn't run. After a minute or so I switched to 'AUTO' & the fans immediately started up. I also checked out my temp sensor & it seems to be working fine. I'm getting about 700 Ohms @ ambient temp & about 70 Ohms when dipped in water just below boiling.

I gave my throttle body a brief in-situ clean with some carb cleaner on a clean cloth & the car is still rough when cold but better than before. I'll get a gasket & give the TB a proper clean I think.

Thanks

Definately worth getting the gasket as then you can clean inside the TB and part of the inlet manifold.

It might also be worth having a look at your breather hoses under the manifold to see if any of them are split. If there's oil crusted all over them thats usually a good sign of a split.
