superb tdi 140

Featured Replies

Has anyone seen a badly mangled up oil pump on the 2.0 tdi? I've looked at a certain piece of information that a very kind briskoda member forwarded me, and correct me if i'm wrong, but if the geared teeth that drives the balancer shaft on these oil pumps are damaged, then is it safe to assume that while bits of geared teeth are being stripped, it is possible that swarf and bits of metal would possibly be circulated around the engine and possibly some of it would end up in the oil filter? I assume that the damage done would be rather extensive, and according to this information, it suggested a short engine to be fitted !!

Also, assuming that the gear drive is ok, and the balancer shaft module is ok, and the hex drive is faulty, would it be wise to renew the oil pump complete? In hindsight, experience tells me to renew the complete oil pump, but although it is dammed expensive in TPS, is there any other places one could enquire for prices? Have the oil pumps been redesigned? I've read some information that it is possible to beef up the pump drive...ie making it more robust and obviously more reliable for continued oil to be circulated around the engine.....any idea's out there? roto roto your expertise please

sorry can not help but i want info as well seems grey area. i e -mailed skoda, ans on this issue from them was no recalls .on my 140 bss engine asif they do not reconise any problem !

According to Honest John (so not necessarily 100% reliable, but generally OK) the problem with the oil pump is a result of the corners of the hex-shaped shaft fitting into shallow grooves scored into the inside surface of the pump impellor. Or something.

Either way, the thinking goes that the corners of the shaft round off, causing it to spin freely and consequently fail to drive the pump impellor. The oil starvation is presumably a much bigger problem than any swarf created in the process! ISTR that remanufactured pumps are available that have a hex-shaped hole to match the hex-shaped shaft, by VW continue to supply pumps with the scored marks...

Well i did take the oil filter off, and look for evidence of swarf and metal filing contaminates, and even checked the filter itself...but everything was basically perfect...nothing but the residue of engine oil. So i'm hoping that when funds allow, i will get the independant to whip the sump off and just check the pump and renew. While he will do that, i'll get him to find out about the beefing up of the pump that i've heard about...makes sense to see if there is something out there that will enable the oil pump to function as it should do, without deciding to fail again.

Because although i'm driving the new superb occasinally, it would be nice to actually get the black one back on the road....where it belongs .
