that sounds very decent.i dont know because i still on my 1st tank.when i bought the car off the guy he still has 1/4 of a tank and i did something like 180 miles and then i filled up to the brim i managed 64L and i read the actually fuel tank is only 62 and reserve tank adding another 6L so does that mean I was in my reserve tank already before i fill up for the 1st time?

The worst I have had is 650, the best 800, I normally fill up at around 680 miles with a good 30 - 40 miles left in the tank.

I filled up today @ 675 miles with 55 miles left.

i filled up yesterday at 590 where the trip computer says i got no more miles left.but i only put £10 worth of diesel in.gonna fill up today see how much fuel can go in.

my right foot is quite heavy as well:P hopefully i can get 650 out of my next tank.

when the computer says 0 Miles how far can you go on that if drive normally?anyone attempted?

When I use the loud pedal on my V6 it does like a drink, but driving sensibly I get 550 to 650 from a tank and have broken the 700 once though it is difficult driving like this and requires a lot of patience.

As a sidish note having done a load of research about the V6 and its VP fuel system I have recently started adding 2 stroke oil (JASO-FC or FD - low smoke) when I fill up (250-300ml) and have noticed a slight increase in mpg (2-3) and better starting :thumbup:

550 Miles out of a 2.5!

Best ive EVER had is 440 miles and that was changing gear at 2000 RPM and coasting a LOT. Although looking at the age of your car im guessing it has the reworked 2.5 - 163 BHP not the 155 ive got :)

The way I look at it, it costs the same as a 1.8 Petrol Focus to fill up so im not too bothered, but now ive seen these figures im starting to wonder if there is something up with my car. Trip computer on my car rarerly says above 30 MPG on my 10 mile drive to work, but like I say, I have a lead foot :D

The V6 is not an efficient engine - as its CO2 figures relative to its output power suggests. It's an old tech diesel with a rotary pump injecting at far lower fuel pressures than a PD or CR engine. Coupled to a slush pump auto, the efficiency is appalling - as is reflected by the road tax. In auto form, it's no faster than a 1.9 PD manual.

Don't add 2 stroke oil to your fuel unless you want the EGR valve and VNT vanes sooted. Just run it on diesel fuel to EN590 as outlined in the handbook.

i was thrilling by the turbo so i keep reving it and step on the throttle quite hard.but about 60% of the time i shift around 1800rpm just before the turbo on full boost and i coast quite a bit. but i was attempting the top speed run on a downhill once kept the throttle floored like a minute and around other time i done the traffic light drag race to get in lane hence i only acheive about 40MPG:(

Just done a fill up now and brimmed it at 62.34L

how much is your usual fill up?the fuel tank total including reserve tank is 68L isnt it?

My car is the 163 (or 120KW) auto. I've just driven 100 miles, early start (avoid the traffic) to meet a client early - all motorway, cruise set at 60mph and Maxidot indicates 46.7 (not 100% accurate I know but not far off)

If I ever have to get to a client and it involves a longish drive I tend to leave at "silly o'clock" as I hate sitting in traffic. I live in the north west and often have to travel south of Birmingham and object to paying £5 for the toll (even if it is on expenses) - so take the normal route if I hit it before 6am. Driving at these times reduces the likelihood of having to stop and you can practice 'hypermiling' which, whilst boring, can improve economy quite a bit.

My car has 135K on it and I love it and want to try and keep it going as long as I can because, to be honest, I can't find anything that comes anywhere near for the £. I tend to over maintain my cars and had looked into the rotary fuel pump (VP44) as fitted to the V6 as they are slated for their inherent weaknesses - specifically the failure of the internal electronics and mechanical wear.

Theory is that the internal electronics fail through overheating as the pump is cooled by the flow of diesel so not running your car low on fuel is advised as it won't have time to cool as it is recirculated if the level is low.

On mechanical wear, In summary since the sulphur content in diesel has been lowered over the years there have been problems with mechanical pump failures (sulphur acts as a lubricant) and adding two stroke effectively replaces what has been removed from pump diesel. Choice of two stoke oil is important, if you are adding it you should go for a one that is low smoke / ash and complies with JASO-FC or JASO-FD.

I take on board what roto says about EGR and VNT problems but I'm keeping an eye on these areas. I checked the VNT operation on my turbo before I started this 'experiment' (10 tanks now) and the only thing I've noticed is a gradual improvement in performance and economy.

As a disclaimer my experience may be different to somebody elses but all I know is its worked for me, if you want to research the subject read the thread above - it's a large one so give yourself some time to read it through and then start Googling the subject if you want more.

Remember that you are not doing your "experiments" under controlled conditions. If you have been monitoring consumption over the last 10 tankfulls, the ambient temperature has been changing with the seasons. Don't underestimate the effects of this - charge density has a big effect on a diesel engine's efficiency. Engines need to be tested on a test bed under controlled conditions to get useful results. You also need proper instrumentation.

The VP44 is a horrible device - made when the CAV/Hartridge patent ran out which covered the use of radial plungers. Putting any electronics inside a fuel pump is madness and they fail through either thermal cycling damage or vibration damage to the stupid fragile flexi printed connections inside. I would not rely on this device for long term fault free operation - I've seen too many broken ones.

Keep lubricating oil out of fuel - whether caused by sump overfilling or deliberate addition. Sooting will be a problem if you don't. Additional lubricant won't make much difference to the VP44 if your fuel meets EN590 - if it's going to break, it will and the fuel has little to do with it.
