P0401 EGR

Featured Replies

Hi guys i'm new here, tried searching for 'EGR' but no results show! Suprising.

I'm trying to work out whats up with the EGR on a superb, 54 plate. It's throwing up a P0401 fault code and keeps throwing it up after a reset.

I'm under the impression that this is obviously related to the EGR system and the flow of such.

Does anyone know of how i can rectify this problem? It's a matter of urgency as the car needs to go for it's Hackney carriage test and won't pass with the EML on.

Many thanks in advance.

I think that 'EGR' has probably got too few charachters to bring up a search result. Try searching 16785 which I think is the same as fault code PO401. Good luck.

Hey, thankyou very much for your help, i searched '16785' and found what i was looking for.

I removed the egr pipe and the unit on the boost pipe and found that the plunger thing was all blocked up with exhaust residue. Cleaned it all up and reset the codes... So far so good!

Thankyou.

I'm glad I could be of help to you. Let's hope those fault codes remain 'off' ie all being sorted.

Damn... I could say you tempted fate, infact i will. The bugger is back on!

Any ideas on what next? Still throwing up the same code.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by the 'plunger thing'. I'm not a mechanic. Have you tried cleaning the throttle body with some carb cleaner?

PS

How long did you drive/use the car before the EML came back on after resetting the codes? I've just reset mine.....well yesterday morning and the EML hasn't come back on yet. Fingers crossed.

The guy who did my MOT said to me that it was an easy job to block off the EGR and make it redundant. And the car actually goes better without it. However, I'm not sure how this would effect any future emissions test. Anybody?

Hi - I own a Skoda Fabia 1.4 petrol (Y plate) , and seem to be plagued with the EML being lit up and giving the EGR' as the fault. My garage mechanic has now suggested blanking off the EGR as you also have been told. I have obtained a VAG blanking plate from Ebay (only £2.80) and will be getting the EGR blanked off this week. I will let you know how I get on. Apparently, the engine may run slightly richer (but this will be marginal and should hardly notice I have been told). The engine will draw more air in and performance may be improved in the lower revs area. I am hoping the engine management light will not come on again once reset and the EGR blanked ? (fingers crossed!!).....my mechanic has said they have blanked off a few Vauxhall EGRs and had no problems with the dash light (EML) coming on following this procedure.

The EGR is only fitted on cars for purposes of the American market (if exported) where controls on Nitrous oxide levels are much stricter than in the UK. The EGR's are not needed, and do not form part of the emissions test on the MOT - as my mechanic has stated, which has convinced me with going ahead with the blanking of the damn thing !!

Guessing its a 1.4 16v if its got EGR, you probably will log a fault code with EGR insufficient flow if it is blanked off.

Id be checking the port isnt blocked under the throttle body if it hasnt been already.

Thanks Tech1e - paid to have it blanked off by the garage (the blanking plate from Ebay was too big, so they had to make one, as not a Skoda genuine part available). It is a 1.4 16v Fabia estate.....and guess what?....after only 10 miles the EML has come back on....really annoying me now!

The garage (not a dealer) have offered to check if it is the EGR fault code again, and they said that there may be a software upgrade available ?....but wonder if they are guessing? They confirmed that the EGR did not appear to be very dirty, and the upper throttle body has previously had a dose of carburettor cleaner sprayed into it also, but that wasn't too gummed up either, around the valve flap.

They have said that it could be a fault with the ECU (but to replace this would be expensive....and it may not be that!)

Any other ideas?.....as don't want to throw much more money at this! Have blanked the EML with black tape on the dash as LIGHT IS DRIVING ME MAD !!!
