Engine coolant level

Featured Replies

Re the correspondence on oil levels here I went out to do a check....3000 miles and oil dipstick level still reads full.................but the engine coolant level is very near to minimum... do you think this may be a problem??

Was the engine hot or cold?

If cold the coolant will be lower down the expansion tank.

A general rule of thumb is that the coolant should be up around the 'equator' line in the spherical expansion tank when the engine is up to temperature. There should also be 2 marks on the side showing hot and cold levels.

Best thing to to is monitor the level over time, it might have been like that from new.

Thanks...engine was cold and I can't swear to the level when I got the vehicle....will keep an eye on it.

Found mine a bit low and similarly could not remember where it was when I collected from the dealers new. Topped her up when cold with demin water and has stayed pretty much the same level since.

TP

G12 coolant to top up

I was topping up the screenwash reservoir last week and saw that my coolant was also low, more by accident than design due to a terrible bit of design which hides the coolant level from easy viewing. It was lower than the bottom marker but have no idea if it arrived like that or not. I have topped it up and will monitor the level from now on.

If anyone has not checked this out it is well worth it.

My today experience: liquid 2 millimeters below the minimum.

While opening the cap I heard some pressurised air exit.

This looked strange as the engine was cold.

The liquid grew (I suppose due to the relief of the pressure) and set at 3 mm above the minimum, so I closed the cap without any addition.

Closing the cap I noted a "click" and the upper slot positioned in the "road direction", BUT PREVIOUSLY, unscrewing the cap -I am sure- no click and the slot was transversal! So I suppose a wrong initial cap closing...

Bye.
