My New 06 Plate vRS TFSI....

Hello,

I pick up my new car on Tuesday, Its an 06 plate Octy vRS TFSI in Silver and I was chuffed to find a mint one with only 12,000 miles on the clock.

However someone (Wardy) has told me that this may not necessarily be a good thing as it hasn't moved much in 4 years. Can anyone tell me the kind of problems I may expect and if there is anything I need to be checking in particular. I have it booked into my local VAG specialist the day after purchase....

Apologies if my comment has caused concern :)

Just with the car averaging 3k a year, I'd be interested in what types of journey it's undertaken. The majority might have been short 'shopping type' trips for example, where it could have been all stop/start traffic and the turbo and engine don't get chance to warm up before the journey's over - that type of thing. Also whether the engine and performance have been 'exercised' fully on occassion. Perhaps a check-over of the braking system too - have these been used enough, particularly the rears.

Those are the types of questions I'd have, so a general checkover sounds like the best way forward :thumbup:

It was previously owned by a 77 year old man who used it as his motorway car. He had 2 other cars, a softtop for the weekend and a diesel for his general run around. So as it's been used primarily on the motorway thought it should be ok. Will be getting a full check over any way...

That's for the info wardy, now stop wee weeing on my bonfire, I'm all happy. Hehe

If you have any kind of warranty, even though the miles are low I would make sure the Cambelt was changed at 4 years as like most insurance, warranty companies like to use failure to comply as a wriggle out :(

No warranty on the car as its a private seller.

The cambelt hasn't been changed but to be honest I didn't mind as it was no where near the 60K point. Is it worth getting done soon do you think as it's over 4 years old...?

Belts tend to deteriorate both with age and mileage. So best to get it changed.

My own 2008 TFSI only does a low mileage each year - but they tend to be all long and fairly rapid journeys.

Its no good assuming high or low miles is a good thing. The common notion is that high mileage means lots of motorway and main road cruising and therefore a good thing. Many years ago I had a company car (when I was doing some work for Rover Group - as was). I put high miles on the car but it was all stop start traffic and a lot of short journeys - you need to know the facts. In your case I would imagine an low miles TFSI that's mainly been used on motorways would be an excellent buy!

Congrats on the purchase. I'm nearly 2 months in to my 06 plate VRS TFSI that I bought from a dealership. Mine had done 46k and I made sure that the belts would be changed as part of the deal due to the age. I think the cost is around the £300 mark, but if you've got a good car at a good price it is worth doing. Should hopefully be cheaper at a specialists.

The motorway thing - well you've got to take that with a inch of salt. The car may be fine and you may even be able to buy an extended warranty if it has been servived as per the book. First thing is to get it serviced and take it for a good blast if you ask me.

I bought my 56 plate vRS from my Dad with 20,000 on the clock 3 weeks ago and i have it in tomorrow for its cambelt kit and water pump, you cant be to carefull!!!!! Only problems it had is the ABS/ECU Teves 60 thing which was replaced under warranty and 2 new headlight washer covers as they fell off.

Its booked in on wed for a service and check over. I will get them to inspect the cambelt then.

The Mk60 teves fault has just occurred on mine 2 days before collection, seems to happen on the majority around the 4 year point. :S

It's over the change point for the belt on age, so just get it changed. Belt, tensioners and waterpump should be replaced, plus the aux belt perhaps.

Belts are just as likely to perish with age and/or lack of use, so beware. Far too many people have presumed it's just mileage based and not had them changed. The tensioners themselves have also been known to let go and cause failure, while the belt itself has been in OK condition.

Sorry, pretty negative post again - but at least people are then aware of the potential risks :yes:

I think it'll be fine, after all look at all those very expensive rare prestige cars that sit around in millionaires garages for decades and only get an occasional run out - and they always seem none the worse for the experience :)

I wouldn’t worry too much about lack of use; if the engine has had the recommended services etc and the correct fully synthetic oil in it all should be rosy.

As everybody else had recommended the cam-belt at 4 years is a must.

Stop worrying and enjoy......

When i put my car in for service i asked about cambelt change (4 year old 26k miles) and they said it didn't need done ? why would they say that if everyone else is saying that it needs done ?(sorry for hi-jacking thread)
