Day running lights on 2011 Octavia Scout

Featured Replies

I have just taken delivery of a September 60 registration Octavia Scout. The DRLs are a cop-out to meet the new regulations.

When the so-called DRLs are switched on, what you get is the the parking lights and dipped beams and rear lights all on at the same time, but without the dashboard lights on. Not exactly eco-friendly as it causes increased fuel consumption and wears all your bulbs out a lot sooner.

I am looking for some super bright LEDs to fit into the front bumpers or the grille. Has anyone got any ideas? The Ring LED set (Halfords £34!! Maplin £20 for the same product) will slot into the wide vents but would have to be fixed in with no nails as you can't get a drill in there. The only trouble is that they are just not bright enough, so I am taking them back. I have tried the bendy strips you can get on ebay, but again they only show up when it gets dark.

I think you needed to add the "LED daylight running lights, Auto dimming rear view mirror, light assistant and rain sensor" option to get the foglight location LED DRL's - a bit steep at £285 (though would have been less vat during the current offer).

Not sure how much the LED DRL's would cost to retro fit.

You can spec LED DRLs from the factory on the Scout.

You can spec LED DRLs from the factory on the Scout.

They are a direct replacement for the front fogs though so you have to choose whether you want one or the other.

Auto lights and wipers and the auto-dimming rear view mirror used to be standard fit on the Scout. Seems a bit of a cheek to now charge for them in an effort to justify charge for DRL's!

By using dipped headlights as DRL's means you can have both. I'm not sure the additional load on the alternator will be enough to notice any decrease in MPG?

To be fair I can't remember that last time I used my front fogs so perhaps their benefit is outweighed by the additional visibility offered by DRL's...

When DRL's become law next year does that mean the Scout will loose its front fogs forever?

I was under the impression that the fog light housed twin bulbs, one is a fog the other a DRL, moving on, the link attached in a prevoius post shows the after market type vRSCarl installed. Having installed them myself I can advise that they look excellent, very bright and if fitted correctly give the OEM look. The only critism I have is that after a heavy shower one of the lens condensed up, so i removed it to clean it out and during the refit broke the bloody thing!! However, I have since repaired it and wrapped both lamps in black insullating tape, tbh I think it makes it look even better.

The Scouts are a little different, they have the round fog lights like on the pre-FL vRS.

Thanks guys. In answer to your various points:

The Scout was ordered in March and has only just been delivered. There was no mention of DRLs when I ordered it. The fogs are single bulbs.

HTH : your lights look good, where did you get them from? Are the flush mounted or fitted on top of the bumpers?

The new Scout grill styling poses a problem. The wide slots underneath will only accommodate something 3/4" wide max. The honeycomb grille is very shallow so it would need a very slim light. I haven't seen anything that would fit into the radiator grille.

Has anyone tried the slat SMD strip lights? Could these be mounted into the headlights?

They are by the far the most OEM looking aftermarket LEDs I've seen, good job emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Bloody good job Lee if you lived nearer I`d pay you 100 quid for you to install some on mine B)

So its illegal to drive with fog lights on but you can have blindingly bright LED's

Can anyone explain why fogs in the day are considered such a problem ?

Edited by Stuart_J

Can of worms there Stuart

For the record, I too have never had a problem with oncoming cars with their fog lights on during the day - and I've seen plenty!

Not once have I been blinded or dazzled by (front) fog lights in 12 years of driving (even in the dark).

What is worse are incorrectly adjusted headlights from either in front or behind.

Fog lights are mounted low and point downwards to light up the immediate road, not long distance. Even on wet roads I've never been affected by glare.

What does cause problems for me is when I am following a car that appears to have its front fog lights on. When the driver of the oncoming car vents his frustration by flashing their main beam, then it is the driver in front, me and everyone behind who is dazzled - much worse by main beam than they were from the fog lights.

Saying this I've never felt the need to use my front fog lights when its not foggy. They don't improve visibility when not foggy and don't look 'cool'. If I want to be seen (in the absence of DRL's) during the day I'll just use dipped headlights.

I have read with interest the many threads whereby people explain the down right dangerous act of using front fog lights unnecessarily. In my experience the LED DRL's on the vRS are just as bright as any halogen fog lights I've seen.

So for me, if I see another road user with their front fogs on do I flash them? No, because that makes me as bad as them.

Thanks guys. In answer to your various points:

The lights are from ebay, as found by vRSCarl, I've just done a search and the seller doesn't seem to have them, maybe because I contacted them about the water ingress!

The lights are fitted as flush to the bumper as possible having inserted them into the outer grille inserts, I modified both the grilles' and the lights slightly to achieve the best possible OEM finish.

These are pictures of the original fit, where I carried out further mods to the grilles to incoporate a CAI, but I have since replaced them with standard unpainted grilles as I think it adds to the OEM look.

Finally you're definately new on here..... :giggle: I'm Lee not HTH, which means Hope That Helps
