Some questions from a Newbie.!

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

Very informative forum and you have helped sort a couple of little niggles but I can't find the answer to a couple of questions so I thought I would ask......

I have a 53 plate Octavia Elegance 1.8t 4x4 Estate, it's an ex Police Dog Carrier so there are no rear seats and it has 2x dog cages in the rear. I love the car but it has a couple of niggly faults.

The first one is when I start it from cold it sounds terrible, it almost sounds like the manifold or exhaust is blowing big time but after about 30 secs to a min it stops and the car sounds lovely as it should..... It's that bad that my wife who knows nothing about cars even asked what was wrong with it.!!! Is this something or nothing.??? The next question is what type of alloy wheels will fit the car ie offset etc.?? It came with only 3x alloys and 1x steely on it, I would like to either get another 16" alloy for it or get another set of 4..... Do any Octavia wheels fit it or does it have a different set as it is 4x4.?? Also are there any other VW/ Audi wheels that would fit it.??

Thanks in advance for any help that you can offer.!!!

John

The noise is most probably your secondary air pump. This is a cylinder shaped thing in front of the sump, below the oil filter. The rivets that hold the two parts of the pump together disintegrate so air escapes and you get a vacuum cleaner kind of noise for 90 seconds after you start up until the pump stops. You can take the pump off and replace the rivets with bolts (search "secondary air pump").

Any alloys from a Mk1 Octavia will fit as will any alloys from the Mk4 Golf platform cars, i.e. Audi A3, Golf Mk4, Seat Leon, Audi TT

First problem is the Secondary Air Pump, quite common and loads of posts about it if you do a search

Second is the wheel stud pattern is 5x100 and just about anything from the vw stable with the pattern will fit though you might be limited to 16" and above tho i'm not sure
