What graphics card should I get?

Featured Replies

Out looking at Sat Nav today but ended up buying Medal Of Honour Pacific Assault. Can't play it though because it says my graphics card isn't compatible. It's a 32mb Nvidia Geforce 2 and the back of the pack says it requires a 64mb card. Had a quick look on PC World site but there was too much available for me to fathom out what I need.

How do I decide what I need? I don't want to watch TV thru the PC or anything clever, just want the latest games to work without spending a fortune. (Saving that for the Sat Nav)

Will be grateful for any advice

Thanks

dx 9 compatable....my view, unless your after the latest then find a radeon 9800 Pro, no more than 150 (maybe more with VAT).

Alternative is a geforce fx6800.

The radeon's are fine and play dx9 games okay.

I would go for a GeForce card again, something like a GeForce FX5200 128 or 256MB card. These would let you play all the games out just now, and good value at 30-40 quid, should be okay for most the games released in the next 12 months as well.

They all tend to come with TV-Out amongst other things these days, it wouldn't be much cheaper if you found one without.

ebuyer have some here reasonably priced.

What sort of spec is the rest of your machine? Won't be worth paying a fortune for a graphics card if any major upgrades are planned in a year or two, as PCI Express looks like it might be good enough to usurp AGP.

I'd agree with Ross, the FX5200 will be a leap forward from the Geforce 2, and it's a solid budget option.

Rob.

GeForce 6600 GT

Good preformence for that amount of money, plus it supports all the latest features :)

I have a Nvidia 5700LE and have been very impressed with it, is only on a celeron 2.8gz \ 512mb but can run the GTR demo at full detail (1024x768x32bit)...

the 9600xt is good at a good price

AMD Athlon XP2000 1.7ghz/256mb RAM, 220GB running Windows XP Pro. Checked out the 256mb FX5200 and it looks fine for what I want.

As always, thanks for advice. Looks like I'll have to wait a while before I can play MOH Pacific Assault then!

I have an un-used (apart from a quick test) Abit FX5600 256mb card which is surplus to requirements,as I was given a Radeon 9700pro.

PM me if your interested open to any offers as is only sitting on a shelf taking up space.

Plumsoul, I'd get yourself at least another 256MB of RAM to stick in whilst you are changing your graphics card as well, might help things run a bit more smoothly for not a lot.

Agreed! my next graphics card

plumsoul, Ive got the same problem as you. When that message pops up it lists all the cards so basically any those cards should do. Only games and high end graphics (ie rendering 3d) would require high graphics card.

So if u just play games. Geforce 5600-5900 range and 9600XT + or 9800s range is good. All depends on ur budget.

Geforce 5600 - 5900 is
