Wiper Noise

For the last while I

Gaff,

After having just removed my wiper arms (see my recent post), I found the best method was to apply copious amounts of WD40 and leave them for a while. After about 30 mins I gave them a good wiggle and eventually they came loose. There was quite a bit of corrosion on the spigots from the wiper mechanism, which I will clean off and grease before the arms go back on.

I was going to put on WD40 but the top of can was broken, I did put some 3in1 oil on but it'll be tomorrow before I get to take them off now, I did put the nuts back on :D .

What are spigots (sorry for stupid question), what's wrong with your wipers.

The spigots are the shafts that come through the scuttle panel to drive the wipers (maybe not the correct term ;))

My wipers have a problem where they have difficulty getting started. Once they are going they are fine, but they often sit about 6 inches above their starting point and then eventually wipe correctly. There's a strange noise that also occurs about the same time, which I assume is the wiper motor complaining. I've had them stop half way up the screen before, too. After leaving them a few minutes, and intermittent wipe returned them back to normal.

My problem is that I need the car this week and in this weather can't do without the wipers. If I can get them working enough I'll get it booked into the dealers to be looked at, just in case any new parts are required (it's getting close to end of warranty).

Mine wipe okay its just when they start to go up and turn to come back down the noise can be heard. I just thought if it just needed greasing I could do it myself, leaving it would probably make it worse.

I'd say both of you need new linkages, they aint that expensive and are very common for seizing up.

Ross,

Whats inside the "spigots" linkage mechanism , is there bearings ? Is there a chance they just need to be periodically lubricated ?

Mines working fairly okay it just sounds very dry at certain points.

Thanks for the help guys

Gaff did it sound like a faint squeak? Mine did this the other day for a bit then stopped was bugging the hell out of me

My wipers are a nightmare. They squeak constantly and often will not stop when you turn them off for ages then stop half way up the screen. Tired of trying to get it fixed, and both Octies I have owned have suffered from this problem.

No, I thinks its more than that. Its like a binding noise when bearings are gone. The wetter the windscreen the less the noise is.

Had mine into the dealers today. I expected them to replace the wiper linkage but, in fact, they spent a good part of an hour stripping it down, cleaning it and removing the corrosion, lubricating it and then putting it back. It's as right as rain now and, now I know the potential problem, I'll be re-lubricating them myself from now on.

I'll be re-lubricating them myself from now on.

:naughty:

Don't blame me, I just give him the lines....

Mine makes this noise too, was planning on looking at it tomorrow - If possible I'll take some photos of the removal/greasing etc.
