VOSA Road side check

Featured Replies

Naughty! :p I am thinking about getting a sunstrip on the inside in a tint of some grade, just to eliminate that annoying gap between visors and rearview mirror when driving into a low sun (becoming more of an issue for me as winter approaches)

I'll have to ensure it doesn't affect the swept area of the screen though. It will be on the inside too though.

as i said there was a van with a very small very light tint on the inside of his windscreen and he was made to remove it :dull:

Quite rightly too.

But if you make the sun strip out of window tint film, then providing you do not go below the mark on the screen it will be legal .

legally you are allowed to hae a sunstrip as long as it's not more than a certain depth/size (6 inches??) so you shouldn't have to remove all of the sunstrip, just removed it up to a legal point depending on how big the maximum legal size is.

This is what the MOT testers manual has to say:

Additional Opaque Films.

Additional opaque films are subject to Reason for Rejection 1 whether fitted on the inside or outside of thewindscreen.

Reason for Rejection

1. In Zone ‘A’: a. damage not contained within a 10mm diameter circle, or b. a windscreen sticker or other obstruction encroaching more than 10mm c. a combination of minor damage areas which seriously restricts the driver’s view In the remainder of the swept area: d. damage not contained within a 40mm diameter circle, or e. a windscreen sticker or other obstruction encroaching more than 40mm f. a temporary windscreen fitted.

Zone ‘A’ is: · in the swept area of the windscreen · 290mm wide · centred on the centre of the steering wheel.

Sweeped area is the reason I had to remove it but as the wipers go almost to the roof line you would have to fit smaller wipers BUT you could still fail an mot as I am told the testers have a list of every cars OE wiper size so I think unless your very lucky its all against you and you will be asked to remove it

could you slide the wipers to the left a bit when they are in the down position so when they wipe the tip is not as high

The following link (same site) for the MOT testers manual is worth adding to your favourites.

This is a link to the official VOSA manual, which is the one that the MOT tester will refer to:

VOSA Manuals

These are updated as the test changes.

As for:

'am told the testers have a list of every cars OE wiper size'

That's not true, the checks on the wiper blades are for condition and security, no mention is made of measuring the size, though the swept area does have to be of a sufficient size to give the driver an adequate view of the road (through the windscreen) to the left and right sides of the vehicle, as well as to the front.

Thanks fordfan.

I was looking for the official test manuals about a year ago and couldn't find them.

No problem, all of them are here including the special notices:

Testing Manuals

Police only have the ability to check Road tax and insurance, where as Vosa have power to check MOT they where on a pull that day almost like they have been told by the sg to go get someone ....... anyone!

Still Very nice you only got away with the sun strip. the would not be allowed to supply you with tools for health and safety, 'you could use it as a weapon'

Count yourself lucky you only see these once in a blue moon...... my old school mate does this now! emoticon-0120-doh.gif

I think you would like to know that Police would also be looking for Drink/Drug Drivers, and also that someone might have stolen your car!. (by using their noses, eyes, and intuition!).

@ the OP, Si VXR,

Of the cars pulled, did anyone get a notice for lights? Particularly aftermarket HIDs? Given the amount of discussion going around (and around) about them. It would be helpful to know if the VOSA lot are checking up on them.

Cheers,

J.
