What do you DIY Mechanics/ Mechanics use and what would you advise I am planning to do basic stuff on my car.

Halfords have a trolly jack / 2 ton axle stands / crawlboard for €75 euro on the Irish site, maybe £50 STG in the UK, looks like it would do the job.

Finally got the axle stands and trolley jack from 'Machine Mart'. It was a mission finding the place...YESTERDAY put the postcode into my rather old Tom Tom the place was meant to be on Manchester Road, Altrincham I ended up in Warrington!!! So I thought I would try it again today did not bother with the postcode and found it fine!

You must have done something interesting with TomTom the first time round then - as both Machine Mart and Manchester Rd have been there sometime

Me thinks you might have entered WA4 instead of WA14 into TomTom, as the first part of the postcode

Anyway, glad you're sorted.

Back on-topic, I just use a trolley jack and stands. Tried ramps for something on my Focus which had lowering springs and the skirt on the bottom of the front bumper didn't even clear them. So I went and bought a trolley jack there and then, and it's done the job ever since

Could be the case!!! Anyway am I going to need to use some kind of wooden block with the axle stands as well? Surely they could have designed the jacking points better?!!!
